I give the scammers credit this one is clever. There is a new Malware going around that once it hits your computer it runs a scan on your hard drive for any torrent files. When it finds one (legal or illegal ones) you get one of these messages:
After that then victims are given a warning and told they can pay a one time fee of $400. to avoid being prosecuted. They are also told that if they choose to go to court that they are risking 5 years in jail and a fine of $250,000. You have to admit the scam is a good one. I mean what are folks who are pirating going to do call the police and tell they they are being blackmailed for stealing. Needless to say there are some who download legal items from BitTorrent sites.
if you choose to go to court and not pay the one time $400. fee then you will see this:
According to TorrentFreak:
"A new type of Malware is riding the wave of file-sharing pre-settlement letters by infecting BitTorrent users’ machines and then demanding payments in order to make imaginary lawsuits go away. ICPP Foundation try to give the impression they are RIAA and MPAA affiliated but the whole thing is a scam to extort cash and obtain credit card details.
ICCP Foundation claims to be an international company operating out of Switzerland. They say they are “committed to promoting the cultural and economic benefits of copyright” while assisting their partners to fight “copyright theft around the world”.
In fact what they really do is operate a scam to extort money from BitTorrent users."
So if you should see this know its a scam and at that point you might want to check your computer for Malware. Scan your computer with your antivirus and any Malware
protection programs that you might have.
I'd bet dollars to doughnuts though, there are tons of people who fell for and still will fall for this ...
Oh you know it. Once they do figure out that they were scammed they wont report it either. This is a bad one and $400. is a hard lesson to learn.
