Somehow my Microsoft OneNote managed to get it's wires twisted somewhere along the line, and though I already had automatic sync chosen in the settings, it would keep showing that small toolbar near the top telling me to sign in / click it to sync the notebook.

This gets pretty annoying after a short time, having to keep clicking it.

Here's a quick & simple fix, just follow these steps

  • Close OneNote
  • Open up the folder at: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0\ using something like Explorer
  • Options: You can either just plain delete the cache folder, or (recommended just to be on the safe side) rename it to cache.BAK
  • Start up OneNote again; the next time you start it, it'll take a minute to re-download your notebook, and it should never ask to sync again Thumbs Up

Be sure and comment to let us know whether this also worked (or not) for you as well!

Heyoo aaoge,

Dumb question I know, but still have to ask just in case; after renaming the cache folder, do you also make sure the original cache folder is deleted? You can try refreshing the folder a few times to confirm.

Also while doing all of this, open up your Task Manager and make sure no instances of OneNote.exe are still running in the list; if so, click the "Kill/Terminate Process" button on it. Sometimes it'll stay running w/out being visible on screen (i.e. if it crashes or something).

Last thing you could check is if Microsoft/OneNote moved it's data (and thus it's cache) folder from the one mentioned in the original post. It's been over 3 years since it was written and I've never had the issue again, so I haven't had need to look into it. Going off rusty memory I believe there's also a place in it's settings that points to it's data folder; maybe you moved it somewhere else, or it got moved somewhere else on it's own.

Lemme know how it goes.

Shhh.. dont tell anyone, but we also have a private forum area with the really good stuff, see?
