try this link. This is what I could find with a Google search.
You don't know any one who has a vista CD that you can borrow - its not like you need the key if your going to upgrade it to win7 (plus if it had vista you have a key). You have 90 days to activate it and I'm guessing you will upgrade long before that. I'm just thinking if it is a compatibility issue then that might be what is hanging you up. I'm just throwing that out there but I do think that PL's idea of tossing it into another pc might be the way to go.

Can't get partition mounted and cant get this fixed any other options?
Right now I'd see if I could borrow someone's Vista disk, or download it via torrent if you have to, so you can try to boot into the recovery console and do the /fixboot /fixmbr. Your bootloader is screwed up.
Have you tried a Vista specific recovery disc?

Try that.

I recall having like issues with this in the past. That's one of the problems with dual boot systems. If that boot record gets screwed up, you're done for unless you have a repair disc, or the original disc. I agree with Stardogg here in that it's your boot record that's screwed up.
That can be quite painful to fix. If you can get this fixed, can I offer some advice for future use?
1. If possible, get a second hard drive so that if one thing fails, you have a second piece of hardware so that either partition isn't screwed up on the same physical drive.
2. You might want to have a piece of virtualization software like Sun's Virtual Box. That way, you might have an operating system of like kind to fix the other existing one, and be able to readily see the partition in a case like this.
Here is something very cool you can try, but I don't know for sure that it works quite this well with Ubuntu-I got a video driver issue with the latest uprade. I can run Suse with Sun's Virtual Box directly on top of my desktop. In other words, picture a Linux distribution with a completely transparent background running in full screen mode over Vista. It seems to work when I log in as root, and I can hide my Windows menu bar. You can also just run it in full screen mode too. Having said that, you could run Vista or any version of Windows on top of Ubuntu, and vice versa.
Here is another nice thing about virtualization. You can export the ISO image to somewhere else, and assuming it fits on a DVD or some other storage device, you can boot from it as a failsafe. :-)

I'm currious but what is dual booting? What is Ubuntu?

dual booting is when your computer runs two operating systems. Think of it as walking into a building with two rooms you can pick the windows one or you can pick the Linux Ubuntu one. You have to pick one of the other you can't be in both rooms at the same time. Ubuntu is a version of Linux which is a free open source operating system.

Not sure if I can do that with a sony laptop HD ? If it was out of a home PC I would have already done that !
