"A proposal to build a mosque steps from Ground Zero received the support of a downtown committee despite some loved ones of 9/11 victims finding it offensive.
"I realize it's not all of them, but I don't want to have to go down to a memorial where my son died on 9/11 and look at a mosque," said retired FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Riches - whose son Jim, a firefighter, was killed on 9/11.
"If you ask me, it's a religion of hate," said Riches, who did not attend last night's meeting.
Rosemary Cain of Massapequa, L.I., whose son, Firefighter George Cain, 35, was killed in the 2001 attacks, called the project a "slap in the face."
"I think it's despicable. That's sacred ground," said Cain, who also did not attend the meeting.
"How could anybody give them permission to build a mosque there? It tarnishes the area."
I totally agree with these comments and don't understand why it has to be built in this particular spot.
Here's what the mosque will look like.
So what do you think about this? Is it ok for this construction to go ahead? Is it absurd? Insulting to the 9/11 families? Do you think it will create more tolerance or just make matters worse?
I'm opposed to the construction of any place of worship. This doesn't bother me any more than if it were for any other religion.
I have heard that there has been a mosque in the area since the 80's I believe it was so a newer mosque is still no big deal. America was founded in part on freedom of religion and to be free from having a particular religion forced upon you. So if they can do it and they do not intend to paint the side of the building with a big middle finger that says Eff The Towers I see no problem. We can't block them because of what extremists have done.
I have mixed feelings on this one. Should they be allowed to build it yes and I agree with what you said izzle. However I would be lying if I didn't say I wish they would build it somewhere else and make it easy on everyone. Unfortunately I think building it there will make them targets by some who can not look past the fact that they are probably decent ppl that attend that mosque and would mean no harm. In the same respect I feel for the family's that I'm sure want closure and to them this is just a reminder of that horrible day.
Ok I have seen two posts this morning from two different ppl (that don't know each other) saying basically this:
If you think that putting up a mosque 600 ft. from ground zero and having the inauguration on the anniversary of 9/11 is immoral, inhuman, and a complete lack of respect for the memories of all that perished there on that day and their survivors, and that politicians are doing a grave injustice to the fallen heroes, their families and all the people of New York City.
The second one was slightly different but also said that the inauguration was on 9/11. I googled and saw as few other forums talking about it but no news agency that I could see. Anyone else hear anything about this? I really hope this is NOT true because that would be poor taste.
Its nothing but a middle finger to America in general, and why some cant see this, I'll never understand.
Heres a muslim that is right on target.....

I think its beyond absurd but horrible. Who could they even entertain that idea???? The proposal is bad enough.
