last night i tried to open a new gmail account only to find that i cant unless i give them a cell phone number to confirm. does anyone know how long it has been like this? i was annoyed, i dont want to give my cell phone number out like that, they claim its to stop spammers and the like which i think is ridiculous. Do you think a lot of people will have a problem doing this? I for one don't like it.
yerah no joke plus not everyone has a cell phone. Are you sure this is not a step that can be skipped?
exactly, thats what i said. i did go to the FAQ's and there was a question about how can one sign up without a cell phone and it said that if you dont have a cell phone then ask a friend to use their number just so you could get the confirmation code or something to that effect. but to answer your question, no there was no way around it
gmail used to do this because it was by invitation only i thought. so they asked for a cell number to confirm. i never had any problems with it but becasue its mysteriously reverted back to this policy makes me suspecious too. especially b/c i have set up a few gmail emails just this year and never been asked for a ph number.
really? how strange. no i was using FF. i will try again later maybe it was just a glitch or something or i hope so anyway.
How odd. I've had gmail since I got an origional invite before the beta was opened up, and it certainly didn't ask for a phone number... I don 't agree with it. Shame on Google.

yeah give us your cell number so we can spam you or sell it - no thanks google! Lets see how long this lasts because I'm sure they are going to loose alot of folks
it says they wont of course but im not taking a chance no way and i hope they do lose lots of people, its just so ridiculous.

I had no idea they required a cell phone number, how odd is that? I wouldn't want to give out my number either, now I'm wondering too how long it's been like this...
