no i never provide an alternate email address. it asked for the cell phone on the second page along with country Frustrated

Thinking, yeah see it's bc you didn't provide alternate email.
I just retried it without providing an alternate email and i got the 2nd page you were talking about asking for my country and cell phone number.
When you provide an alternate email, it sends a notifcation to that email address. I guess this is a way they can tackle spammers from just signing up willy-nilly without anything legit. When you don't provide the alternate email it's going to ask you for your SMS enabled cell phone number. (though i still think that is a bit much!)

I do know that if you use a proxy server or a program such as Hide IP or something similar to that program GMail will ask you for a cell phone number. As soon as you stop using that type of program or a proxy server they don't ask for it. I don't know if you use anything like this, just a thought.

If you don't give them a alternative email address they ask for the cell phone. I think that is if you should get locked out that they can text you a password vs asking you security questions.
