I have a small usb Thumb DriveThumb Drive that was sent to me by a vendor. It is write protected by some software called logintool 2093.exe. I can't figure out how to remove it and it's bugging me. I can crack the password but it's my drive and I know the password. I just don't want it write protected at all. Anyone know of a utility that will do this? Iv'e been looking around but not coming up with much.

Thanks in advance.
EM.

Did you try and reformat it?

Yup tried it through windows and a cmd prompt and both tell that it's write protected and cant' format. There's no switch or anything like that on the dirve physically.

I have a western digital "passport" that kinda had the same problem, pain in the butt but formatting did it for me. I can't think of anything else off hand.

Re: Logintool 2093.exe

I've found a couple posts with people having the same issue I'm having with this thing but no solutions. I figured there would be some utility that could do it but can't find anything. Not a big deal really but would be nice to remove this stupid write protection stuff.

Re: Logintool 2093.exe

If there's no physical switch on it then somewhere there's got to be a software "switch" that needs a-togglin', most likely the info is being stored in the FAT / Partition table. If a regular Command Line format won't do the trick you could try grabbing a low-level format utility and doing a low-level format, which also resets the FAT table(s). There are both free one's and paid versions all over the net.

You could try using Acronis Disk DirectorDisk Director to completely blow out the partition table(s) and do a reformat too.

Also, here's a nice utility to do a low-level format, specifically made for USB media: OnBelay. There are more USB media specific utilities on the net as well.

Another option could be to try using some Linux format utilities. Sometimes those linux geeks do things better. Wink There are also free downloads of linux that go right onto a single cd that you can pop in and restart your computer to temporarily be in a linux environment (they call them "live distros"), like Knoppix for example, so you can get at quick access to those reformatting utilities, or maybe you have a linux geek friend or co-worker you can throw the stick at and ask to try reformatting it for ya.

And one more option would be to alter a registry key on your computer (for those that don't already know, make sure to back up the registry key before making any changes in case of emergency).

  • Open your registry editor (Start Menu | Run | Type "regedit" and press Enter)
  • Navigate to the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
  • Look for a DWORD named "WriteProtect". If it's already there and set to 1, change it to 0 (zero).
  • (If the "WriteProtect" key is not there at all (doesn't exist), then just exit regedit and forget about this option)
  • Exit Regedit and try seeing if your Flash DriveFlash Drive is still write protected. A computer restart may also help after this change as well.

Let us know if any of these worked out for ya.

Re: Logintool 2093.exe

Thanks guys,

Dogg,

I've tried a few different low level format util's and no go. Havn't tried the acronis yet though. And didn't go as far as the linux cd. I don't have the key's in the reg and havn't gone as far as creating them.

Re: Logintool 2093.exe

Your USB Flash DriveFlash Drive probably uses the ChipBanks chinese chipset, and probably it's the CBM 2093P. Well, to remove write protection and that useless "lock system" you should use CBM2093P UPMTool. You can download it from: This link

Then, if you want a bootable media not secured with password, just go to MP Settings, leave the password field blank and, in the next menu, select Bootable and then hdd; then press OK.

Now you can press Start All and enjoy your new shining unprotected USB HDD drive at the end of the flashing process.

Hope this helps; have a nice day!

Kiba

Re: Logintool 2093.exe

Thanks Kiba,

I downloaded and when I go into the mp settings and leave the password blank I get the next screen but everying is showing up in wingdings or something I can't read.

EDIT: OK I had to run it in compatibility mode. Did that and could use the utility fine. Seemed to do the trick too. One thing weird though it now windows see's the drive as having 62 megs free. I thought it was a 1gig stick.

Re: Logintool 2093.exe

Try switching from English to Chinese and then again from Chinese to English from the Language field, then use MP Settings... that should do the trick!
Anyway, be sure that your USB stick is plugged.

If this doesn't work either, I've prepared a "blind selection maneuver" (Laughing) Big Grin

Just follow the image, after entering MP Settings...

The Trick!

As you can see, I've got the same problem, but i fixed it switching to chinese, returning to english and then using MP Settings.
I've spent almost a day figuring out how to make this messy chipset work, and another time Russian Kickass God helped me Big Grin By the way, I'm italian.

Hope I'll hear good news from you.
Cheers

Re: Logintool 2093.exe

EDIT: First of all, you have to run the program as administrator (not compatibility, sorry I'm telling this to you right now, but I think is not too late). Remember that you have to plug your device before running the program. Then it should be fine.
