I was reading this article today and thought you know that is so true. I have a lot of online friends that I keep in contact with on a daily basis and I do wonder sometimes when I haven't heard from some of them in a few days if everything is ok and then they appear online again and I don't think about it anymore. A Flash Drive with all that information on it, like described in the article might be a good thing to have somewhere just in case.
That is a good idea to burn that information to CD and put in a secure place like the safe you mentioned or a safety deposit box or something like it. I never thought about it getting stolen to be honest.
I do remember when you lost your good friend and the blog you posted about it and how unexpected it was. You are right about online friends they do become a daily part of our lives and when I don't hear from some of them I wonder immediately if everything is ok. I hate thinking about it but anything can happen to anyone in a blink of an eye and burning to CD that kind of information is something we all should do.
Well I live in Hurricane central where one year we got 4 in a row. I also have pictures of my house on the cd too. Not just a few pics but like everything. God forbid something happened to my house atleast I would have the pictures for insurance purposes. Its also a good idea to upload those to like walgreens photo, Walmart photo, snapfish type of site so that you can always access them from there should you need to print them.
That is a great idea as well to take pics of everything in your house. After I read that I was thinking if anything should happen would I actually be able to sit down and tell an insurance adjuster exactly what I had, with a good description of it, all those things that are important for making a claim. With pics there would be no question about it at all. You have brought up some great points, thanks, I never thought about most of this stuff.
That is a really cool program, and it appears there is a need for this kind of thing, something that never crossed my mind at all until I read that article and started thinking about it.

The only thing I would worry about is leaving something like that in the open is what if someone robbed you and took it? I know I have alot of my online login info on a word file and burned to a CD. I have a copy of that in my safe and my mother has a copy of that. In contains not only my online info but also important stuff like who my insurance is through along with policy numbers (for life, home....). I also have a copy of my living will and a copy of a power of attorney in there. I think things like this is important but again kept in a secure place.
As for notifying online friends I know what the daughter went though. This past January one of my dear friends past away. She was my age (40) and had just been released the night before from the hospital having undergone a hysterectomy. Her death was completely un expected. Her mom contacted me and asked if I could find her online friends and contact them to let them know the funeral arrangements. I was friends with her on her myspace so I did a message and messaged them all about her passing. I did the same for a few other websites that she belonged to. In a way it was kinda that type of busy work that kept me from completely loosing it. On the flip side I can't image being one of the good friends who had to receive the message that way that your friend you chatted with so often was now gone.
You know you do build online friends that do become near and dear to you. When they go poof you don't know what happens and it does leave you with that feeling of what if. It is nice when a few of your online friends have a way of contacting you outside of the web should you go poof to do a check up.
