Ok, so son o' mine wants a guitar really bad. So I figured I'd look into it and see what's out there. Does anyone know what would be the most suitable for a 13 yr old and what kind of price range am I looking at. I believe he's not talking about your regular guitar as in this one
I would imagine it's more like one of these
So I'm assuming your 13 year old does not know how to play ?
Biggest mistake any parent can do is buy a guitar from Walmart and hand it to your kid (those guitars do not stay in tune and your child will not learn on them as easy)
Buy a Carlson Electric Guitar !
Now the reason I say Carlson is because they stay in tune a long time, they make a lighter guitar for students that are learner (which means they will stay interested longer) They have the popular designs they are same quality as Fender with fraction of the cost usually !
You can get a nice start up set for about $250 Brand New ! They are made in the USA !
Here is the same One I have ( I would actually sell it for $150 if you are interested ) I paid $270 for everything !
BUT Shipping may be a lot not sure?
I have the amp, Guitar straps, and Case that go with it !
Model# SG1 MSRP $399.99

Carlson® "S" Style Electric Guitar. A versatile guitar for any student or intermediate player! This guitar features: |
The Fender strat was always the most common choice of first guitars when I was in high school. Good guitar and easy to use. I would definitly go electric, an acoustic is harder to learn and the kid is surely gonna wanna hear himself
ive always favored a 5 string ibanez bass myself, but then again i guess thats why its not a guitar,
Definitely don't get them the el cheapo because it will be frustrating and discourage learning if the dang thing won't stay in tune. With that being said, DO NOT go get Mr. Fancy Fender Strat or Gibson Les Paul and pay all that $$ just in case they don't stick with it. I was lucky enough to have an uncle give me a decent one to learn with. You can always look at used guitars and find some decent prices on some of the higher end guitars. I have found Schecter to make cool looking, reliable, good sounding guitars fo a good price. Definitely stay away from any guitar with a whammy bar, that is stringing and tuning HELL!
banjo - get him a banjo - jk
Is he in a band? You know you can rent instraments too. Just a thought incase he gets into it for a month or two and it dies. I'm a band mom of 2 kids. My little guy is new into band and well I can tell you this is his last year in it - he doesn't care for it. My middle guy has been in band for 2 years and LOVES it. I think band in school is awesome.
Oh if your intrested in banjo - I can send my hubby to you with his banjo. What is that saying "I hear banjo music, paddle faster"
I like the idea of renting, that way i can find out if it's something he's really interested in or if its just a fad. Where do I go to rent ? Plus i really want to see what the noise factor is like before i invest in anything.
I dunno just search the yellow pages for your area. Both of my kids rent their instruments which is nice because if they break (and they do) they are fixed for free. Plus my middle son changed instruments. Last year he played the trombone but I think he figured it was a pain in the azz to haul around and the fact that the cute girls play the clarinet he changed. Now he has a little case and sits next to a cutie . I will say clarinet is much easier on the ears too when he practices at home. Trombone sounds like someone has a serious gas issue
. My little guy started off drums but when he found out he had to be at school a hour early because percussion practiced then he said hell no and went to trumpet. OMG my poor ears. So yes I'm glad we rent. Just to give you a idea on charges both cost me around $24.00 a month (each) to rent.
oh and yes don't do Walmart instraments - junk!
$24 a month is a great price.... I think thats what i'm going to do.
You know I'm really pleased with the rental because they were brand new and came with the case. The clarinet has been repaired twice - the finger thingies and at no charge. I know where we get ours from they do have guitars (electric and acoustic) but no clue on the rental fee. I know the rental fee for a french horn is $49.99 - I'm glad they didn't pick that.
Your son should see if they have music in school. I like being a band mom. Next year we start marching band.
