I just sanded my balcony. i'm moving and i didn't want to get docked my security deposit for some superficial burn marks that were on the wood already prior to moving in (but i stupidly didn't put anything down on the Condition of the Apt list when i moved in, i was so busy with moving in back then that i never got around to it).
so i just used a wood floor edger. thought it would be a piece of cake. didn't wear a mask for the first half of it or so. don't ask me why, i just thought it wouldn't be a big deal. when i finished i was covered in sawdust {i showered after} and when i blew my nose several times...i'll spare you.
well, now i don't feel very good. maybe it will pass though.
but i googled because i was wondering if this was common? i found that -duh- wood is usually treated with a chemical combination that includes Arsenic and there have been many reports of people getting ill, having long-lasting damage, or dying from it.
SO let this be a lesson to anyone who is thinking of taking on a household fixer-upper task. Wear a mask!!! It's for a REALLY good reason!!
ruh-roh! glad you're okay SD! don't know what we'd do without those ab-shots

update: i'm feeling better now that i ate something i don't usually get woozy in the morning even w/o brkfast so... well whatever, in the past now.
anyway, but i forgot to post a link. here's some official govn't CDC information: http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts2.html#bookmark05 though you can find all sorts of personal accounts by googling. Virtually all the pressure-treated lumber you buy at home-improvement stores contains the same pesticide: chromium copper arsenate, or CCA.
Breathing high levels of inorganic arsenic can give you a sore throat or irritated lungs.
Ingesting very high levels of arsenic can result in death. Exposure to lower levels can cause nausea and vomiting, decreased production of red and white blood cells, abnormal heart rhythm, damage to blood vessels, and a sensation of "pins and needles" in hands and feet.
Ingesting or breathing low levels of inorganic arsenic for a long time can cause a darkening of the skin and the appearance of small "corns" or "warts" on the palms, soles, and torso.
Skin contact with inorganic arsenic may cause redness and swelling.
Almost nothing is known regarding health effects of organic arsenic compounds in humans. Studies in animals show that some simple organic arsenic compounds are less toxic than inorganic forms. Ingestion of methyl and dimethyl compounds can cause diarrhea and damage to the kidneys.
Several studies have shown that ingestion of inorganic arsenic can increase the risk of skin cancer and cancer in the liver, bladder, and lungs. Inhalation of inorganic arsenic can cause increased risk of lung cancer. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the EPA have determined that inorganic arsenic is a known human carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that inorganic arsenic is carcinogenic to humans.
There is some evidence that long-term exposure to arsenic in children may result in lower IQ scores. There is also some evidence that exposure to arsenic in the womb and early childhood may increase mortality in young adults.
There is some evidence that inhaled or ingested arsenic can injure pregnant women or their unborn babies, although the studies are not definitive. Studies in animals show that large doses of arsenic that cause illness in pregnant females, can also cause low birth weight, fetal malformations, and even fetal death. Arsenic can cross the placenta and has been found in fetal tissues. Arsenic is found at low levels in breast milk.

GG. I hope you feel better, and this is super important info to have!
Oh GG not good. I'm glad your feeling better. Yikes about the nasty chemicals. Its amazing that we don't all fall over dead from all the crap they use to treat things with.
I was doing an art class with concrete.... Guess what I was blowing out of my nose because I didn't think I needed a mask? Not a nice thing at all. Now I always wear a mask when doing anything involving dust.

Yeah always wear eye protection too ! I had a sanding disk fly across the room (from some other retard that was sanding) in 1999 and cut through my eyelid into my eyeball and there was fragments of stuff in there for a few days untill I had to have them cut it back open and take everything out ! I still have a scar on my eyelid but most would never know I had a messed up ey and had to take off 8 months from work good thing I made more from L& I than I was working there !
