Now that the DTV transition is right around the corner, Greenpeace and other environmental organizations are worried about a rise in electronic waste. Part of the concern is that people will no longer want to keep their analog sets and instead go out and buy new ones. And then where do these old televisions go?

"We're seeing a new wave of electronic waste that's ending up on the shores of India, China, West Africa, and Latin America," Harrell said.

Electronic waste can contain toxic chemicals and metals. Not only that but picture a mass pile up of televisions, printers, etc. Greenpeace, and others, are asking that instead of just putting an unwanted television out on the sidewalk for the garbage man, that consumers recycle them. This can easily be done by going to the manufacturers website and looking up the recycling information. Also, there are recycling facilities in many communities. Before heading out to one, check that the facility has the E-Stewards Certification.

Electronic Recycler's Pledge of True Stewardship, the most rigorous criteria for sustainable and socially just electronics recycling.

So do the Earth-friendly thing guys...you'll be thankful for it later...

Another thing to do is to look into any type of trade school or tech school and donate them. I had a tv that went on me but there is this one place here local that teaches how to do repairs on appliances and on things like tv's to the less fortunate (just out of jail, recovering addicts and the mentally challenged) to teach them a trade. Alot of times they will take them to either try and repair it or to use it for parts. It just kinda makes you feel good that your not only helping someone out but that your giving life to some electronic that you thought was dead plus bonus - tax right off. Just one more thing to check into if you have them in your area. Oh FYI be honest with them when donating the item what is wrong with it.

good idea. definitely a great alternative to just dumping the appliance out and it's awesome that people get to learn from it.

Another good thing is when your dumping a old pc or monitor is to check with a few local churches. What may be just outdated for you maybe it wont run programs as well is wonderful for some older person who would love a pc just to surf the web some and check email. Just make sure you really wipe any hard drive prior to donating it - do a factory restore so that way no personal info can be pulled if it should fall into the wrong hands.
