Well, those of you that know me, are well aware of the fact that I'm no computer whiz. Heck, I barely scrape by. So on those common occasions where I have a computer mishap. (ie: it's not doing what I want it to, or I somehow broke it) I have a route of attack I take.
Step 1: Yell and scream expletives at said computer
Step 2: Restart. Well because why not really, ya never know what that might fix? I'm a firm believer in "it might fix itself" (fyi: usually... not so much, but I'm not giving up hope yet)
Step 3: More expletives (this step is quite therapeutic)
Step 4: SYSTEM RESTORE
Let's take a look at step 4 for a minute here. Being the computer savvy girl I am :rollinglaugh: I really have no clue what "system Restore" actually consists of. I just know, it pushes my computer back to a day in the past when it was working like I wanted it to. It's like my own little time machine! (A.D.D. moment warning - Man could I use one of these bad boys in real life)
I always pray that System Restore brings back my working computer, while at the same time keeps all the stuff I want. And yes, I expect my computer to read my mind and know what I want it to keep. I mean, geez... these things ARE supposed to make life simple, right?
Anyways... Have you ever wondered exactly what System Restore keeps, and what it dumps to miraculously make your partner in stalking crime purr again? This article states that "The quick, simple explanation is that System Restore backs up and restores the Registry, important Windows files, and the programs you've installed into Windows. It has no effect whatsoever on documents, photos, and so forth." Then it goes on to tell you that the statement is not quite true. Luckily it ALSO proceeds to explain what exactly System Restore does & does not backup. Let's you know what is safe and what is not. You wouldn't want that 82 page thesis you've been working on to be "restored" back to 3 weeks ago, would you? No? Didn't think so. Give it a read. It explains it all much better than I ever could.
As for the rest of my computer fixing steps they are as follows:
Step 5: Crack open bottle of wine
Step 6: Call computer nerd friend, explain that your computer has broken, and you've touched nothing (always deny touching anything, it undoubtedly will be used against you and you will be blamed for breaking it) tears usually help in this step if said nerd friend is of opposite sex. (hysterical tears are an absolute necessity if this phone call is made after midnight, regardless of who you are calling)
Good luck and Godspeed.
I'm with you SM, external hard drives are the way to go.
I haven't used system restore since my computer-savvy boyfriend moved in. He firmly believes it does more harm than good. *shrug*

See that is a great story. You should have told them hey hire me (and pay me what I'm worth) and I'll tell you if not you're getting paid you figure it out.
I use option 7
show your computer guy husband a mini preview of why it would be in his best umm "interest" if he fixes your computer.
he he he
yep, usually works

And if its really bad beg and plead for him to build you a new PC *lots of praise on how he is the pc master* more tears......
Also I'm a firm believer in external hard drives to back your data up. I back up everything (and then some). I hate to say how many externals I have but lets say I could be on Oprah's hoarding show. I have my externals broken up to categories, one for: programs, music, games, photos/docs and one for ummmmm other stuff ;-)
Now days you can get externals at some great prices. I have a few different brands (Seagate, Western Digital, Fatom G & acomada) and I will say I do like the seagate(s) the best, I have two of them (a 500gb and a 1tb)
