Yeah I know. When I was like 19 in college and home one weekend I layed out at my parents pool. No one was home and I had been drinking the night before. Well spring break was coming up and I lived in Dayton at the time so I wanted to look good (mind you red head, fair skin and freckled). So I put on a really tiny bikini, covered myself in baby oil (I was only going to lay out for 10 min) and fell asleep. I woke up 4 hours later. I spent the night in the ER. I looked like that kid but all over. I have never felt such pain. I joke that I know that was the burn that caused all my sun cancer over the years. I now embrace my creamy white skin
Same here, our flight was delayed overnight so instead of going to bed that morning when we got there, we rushed to the beach, string bikini clad, coconut oil in hand, I was ALL THAT....haha or so I thought. Fell asleep, woke up like 4 hours later like a strawberry, still thinking I had got a good color until about 3 hours later back at the hotel I collapsed. The first week of the vacation was spent in bed, layers of skin literally peeling off me, the second week I hobbled around determined to enjoy myself but it was awful, I too at this point cherish my pale skin and take care of it

See its so under rated. I'm sorry I have no idea what ppl see in tanning salons - they really should be banned. I look at them as cancer beds
I couldn't agree with you more! I see people say "OMG I don't smoke, it gives you lung cancer" but yet they say "OMG I have to go, I have my tanning bed appointment" Um yeah total contradiction..
Sundburns can surprise you... I had spent the day at the waterpark, and wanting to look good for a ceremony coming up, I went without the sun screen.... Got a little red, no big deal... Woke up at 3 in the morning in PAIN. We call them moonlight tans.
If I'm just going out for the day, I don't wear any. If I'm at the pool or beach, I do. I have a bit of Native American in me, so I don't really burn... i get an instant tan. And I keep my tan year round.
Thanks, all, for the cautionary tales; most interesting.
living in fl and hanging at the beach all day sunscreen is a must and right up there with packing the ice chest and beach bags. even mini knows she gets sprayed down with the 50 coppertone before frolicking in the surf or riding on the boat. i use the same spray SM uses and then a stick for her face. im terrified of having her beautiful skin damaged. even scratches and bruises on her make me upset. i apply the sunscreen right before we leave (sunscreen takes 30 mins after applying to effectively work) or right when we arrive at the beach and then several times throughout the day. even if its just for a few hours. as for me...and the hubby... we tend to burn more with a higher SPF. i dont get it so dont ask me... we usually use a 10 and just apply it often over the course of the day. the next day everyone is just as white or has a wonderful slight tan.
OOOooooo how did I miss this gem of a thread? My 11 year old was diagnosed by the derm Doc with photosensitivity. She would not burn through the sunscreen I would apply but instead she woul get brown lspots on her face and upper shoulder blade areas. That blister and become very very painful. He sugested a few sunscreens but we fell in love with this one:
I make sure to put on an spf 30 or higher, with zinc in it, everyday (not just when it is hot). Still I burn if I don't reapply every two hours or so, so this year I have had to resort to wearing big floppy hats. It has been a huge help. my arms and shoulders still got pink last weekend (even after reapplying twice) but my face and scalp were still as white as ivory. I want to try the nuetragena cooling SPF spray for the body and bare minerals sunblock ( SPF 30 powder with a tint of color) for the face. Has anyone tried them?

Those pictures of that sunburned kid are disturbing!!
