First I recommend not using Norton or McAfee !
I will tell you the little about what I know about Antivirus Programs (Others may have more knowledge)
AVG is what I recommend !!! Download it here !
Avast is another good alternative but I personally don't use it because it seems to take up more memory and I'm a diehard AVG fan I have used Avast, McAfee & Norton !
Yea I would agree with you guy's on not using Norton or Mcaffee. Espcially Mcafee. I have used both. Mcafee is bloated and will slow your machine down.
AVG is great, NOD32
is also a good one.
I do personally use Norton at my house but only because I don't use a stand alone client. I have a 2008 server setup at my house and use the latest version of endpoint that manages all my clients. I like playing with all that stuff and not having to manage all my pc's I have running at my house individually. This allows me to to let my server manage my def's and all that. But for most people I wouldn't recoment going that rout.
Have you ever tried NOD32 for businesses? I run that on my server at work and I have been very happy with it. Like you said Norton and Mcaffee when they are scanning slow you down to a turtle speed. I have been very happy with ESET
Enterprise Security
. I have no idea on cost wise on one vs the other. I'm just curious as to why you choose Norton for your server.
I guess I'm a huge fan of NOD32. I run it on all of my pc's even my ones that are 64bit systems. As to date I don't think there has been one (virus) written for 64bit but better safe then sorry. I guess my second choice would be AVG
.
Well I guess I"m just use to Norton from a server client stand point and old habbits are hard to break. I rarely have a problem with viruses or spyware myself. And I really don't have problems with Norton when I've used it. Mcafee I have seen it slow things down. But Norton when runnig it on my server I never have. I never played around with endpoint so I gave it a try. I may go look at the enterprise version of NOD32 though. I think I may have at one time can't remember. As long as I can have all my def's pull down and be managed by my server that's all I really care about.

I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money."
I wanted to add a link to this topic in here ! This is one thing I had to do when I got my sony VAIO I had to get Norton 360 off it as sson as i got it ! This is the only way to unistall Norton safely yeah you can use a unlocker program and unistall it but you can mess things up if you don't know what you are doing so this is a One size fits all unistaller, I guess you could say just for Norton !

Question: Son o' mine has the free version of AVG on his computer, but it's about to expire. Can I get another free version or am I totally out of luck. I just don't feel like putting out money for an anti virus, any suggestions?

I'm like you Jayson I jumped long time ago out of the Norton / Mcafee cuddle puddle. I'm sure some are asking why because they are so popular so let me explain. OK say I wanted to write a virus or a trojan (and I never would) I would try and target the largest amount of ppl. So I would look for ways that I could get though the most popular group of antivirus programs which is Norton / Mcafee. Plus if you use those know then you know how they slow your computer down to a crawl when you are scanning - I hate that.
For me I LOVE NOD32
. Its not a free antivirus but sometimes I think you get what you pay for if you know what I mean. They do have a free 30 day trial. I can run NOD32
in the background and surf the web with NO slowdown. Plus I think it catches so much more. I have a pc that I do run a stealth keylogger on (hey I'm a protective mom) and well you don't see this one it is super stelth but NOD32
picked it up and light up like a Christmas tree where when I had Norton it never saw it.
So why did I change? Well about 2 years ago I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my pc. I scanned it 3 times with Norton and nothing but there was something really wrong. Some of my IT friends laughted and told me to get out of the cuddle puddle and use NOD32
so I did. First scan pulled 9 trojans (gotta love kids downloading). I was blown away and never looked back. Oh FYI 9 trojans were due to my kids and Limewire & kazaa which is why limewire & kazaa are banned in my house.
