Have you heard about this?
I guess it was only a matter of time!!

By using stem cell science, scientists have successfully grown little "nuggets" of animal meat. They suppose that in the near future, they would be able to harvest much more than that:
Professor of physiology at Eindhoven University Mark Post, lead scientist of the government-funded research, said “You could take the meat from one animal and create the volume of meat previously provided by a million animals. We need to find ways of improving it by training it and stretching it, but we will get there. This product will be good for the environment and will reduce animal suffering. If it feels and tastes like meat, people will buy it.” read more here
The scientists also surmise that this will solve a lot of problems at once: contamination, livestock greenhouse gases, and vegetarians who don't eat meat because of the slaughtering-factor.
Now, personal opninion: i don't think contamination risks are alleviated at all by this potential use of science, animals are going to fart anyway, and i wouldn't eat meat that was artificially grown--i like my Tbone to have a bone.
So there you have it, Smartmom! Soon you'll be having carnivorous family dinners again!

OK let me give ya a AMEN on the animals farting
Veggie kid is not home yet but I can't wait to show him this and ask what he thinks and would he eat it? P to the izzle what do you think about this? Would you eat it?
OK personally - ummm yeah I'll pass. I would rather not have science lab petri dish dinner. I think this is almost in the same line as the mystery meat they would serve at school or that hunk of food in the back of the fridge wrapped in foil that no one knows what it is or how long its been there.

I would not eat the lab produced meat. For one it still comes from animals. Two, meat would still carry the normal health risks ie, colon cancer, heart disease, obesity etc. It is an interesting science though. There is a peds cardiologist that uses stem cells to grow tissue heart valves for valve replacement surgery. He uses a machine to pump liquid through the valve that exercises the valve so it will be strong enough once implanted. That's some cool tech!
But if you really want an alternative to slaughterhouses, unnecessary death, lower green house emissions...........just eat plant based proteins. Seitan is the bomb and has a wonderful meaty texture. TVP is great in chili or marinara sauce. Fake jerky will provide you with a good chewy time without all the cholesterol. I could go on.
I asked my little veggie kid and he said no way no how. I agree with the medical science behind it and its cool that they can save folks this way. Fake lab meat on the table is just gross!
Oh can I also add that this week will be one year that my 13 yr old has been a vegetarian. It was something he wanted to do (as the rest of us are meat eating folks) and he has stuck to his beliefs. They may not be my beliefs but I am proud of him and we support him.

The concept does sound gross, but then again, as long as it turned out as safe as the real thing, I'd be for it. Imagine how many millions of animals are slaughtered every year that would get to live (or not even be born at all just to be slaughtered). I'm one of those animal lovers that hates knowing an animal needs to die for me to eat, but still loves meat. THiswould be perfect.
Then again, if you really think about it, imagine someone explaining eating regular meat: "ok, first we're going to take this smart, gentle animal, a big ugly cow, or a sloppy muddy pig, that's as smart and friendly as a dog, then were gonna murder it well before it's time, slice it up into chunks and pieces, and throw it on your plate for you to eat".
Doesn't really sound much more appealing to me, once you really describe how it got to your plate.

Uh yeah, I'll pass, that's pretty gross if you ask me!
