Can anyone help me? I acquired an old PC and it has a power on password. Is there a way I can bypass this without removing the battery?

Thanks for your advice. I will try F10 first. If I have to take out the battery, how long should it stay out before putting it back in?

I had to do the battery once. I password protected my bios and well either I hit a key wrong or I could not remember it (a duh moment) so I had to pop the battery out. I simply popped it out waited like a min or two and them put it back in. It did work in removing the password for my bios.
sadly tho, if that does not work, then youll have no choice but to send the comptuer to the manufacture, the bios password is a way to keep the computer from being stolen and used, and usually you have to have proof of ownership as well, that i have no clue on
That did work for the bios password. I had to do that when I changed over to Windows 7. My computer is custom made anyways - there is no manufacture.
well lucky you, you think ypou can find me a compatible processor for a compaq evo W4000 then? jk, and i have had this problem with laptops, but the battery trick never worked, i was always forced to just take the laptop back to them and give them their money back
The battery she is refering to is a small battery that you would find like in a wrist watch that is actually on your mother board. It provides the power for your bios. A laptop would be different as you can't easilly get to the mother board. Sometimes there is a jumper on the system board you can pull off and putt back on too that will clear your bois settings. But if you did take off the battery from the system board you only need to pull it off for a few seconds.
Also if you can get into the bois and there is no option to reset the power on pasword just restore the factory defaults in your bios and that would kill any password that is set.
I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money.''

Did you try and remove it via the bios? Try starting it up and while its loading hit "F10" (multi taps while its loading) and it will start in bios. I believe there is a option in there to remove the password. I'm in the middle of running a report (work) so I can't check and give you the steps at this time. The other way is like you said - open the case and pop out the little battery on the motherboard and put it back in.
