It's been a while since I've had to do this, but it should just mean to start the Netflix app, and then make sure you're on the usual screen where you would see the list of movies/shows. Then start doing the activation pattern listed in the original post.
Out of curiosity (it shouldn't matter either way though) by "Samsung", do you mean a Samsung phone, like a Galaxy SIII (etc.) or a Samsung Smart TV?

I played the show on my phone, started immediately, watched the intro then turned on the smart TV while it was still playing on my phone.
Worked immediately on the TV as it resumed, no error codes

I had this same issue 2 years ago, and I did the same thing and it worked then I believe also.
