Most news sites, forums etc., often allow anonymous user comments which many unfortunately include nasty, hateful, cowardly, racist, comments. Now some sites are forcing people to register with an email, username, and sometimes even your city and phone number.
Comments like the following, has prompted a Buffalo, New York newspaper to no longer allow anonymous comments as of August 3.
"I hate what you people, and by that I mean the blacks, are doing to this city," wrote one Buffalo News reader last month in response to a story about a local shooting. "Each area you move too [sic] quickly becomes over run [sic] with crime, loud music [at] all hours, adults swearing and screaming at kids, children playing in the street, porches with beer and garbage thrown all around."
Being allowed to remain anonymous encourages people to say what they want, how they want without a second thought, not that there's anything wrong with that, but of course you'll always get the cowards who prefer not to give any information so they can spew their garbage without having to reveal anything about themselves.
"By allowing anonymous comments, you're going to get things and information that otherwise would not come to light," said media lawyer Robert Bertsche, who represents the New England Newspaper & Press Association. This guys thinks that, "for example, if a commenter is working at a company where criminal activity is taking place, there's great social value in that person speaking out -- and they're far less likely to do so if they can't post anonymously, he said". That's fair enough I suppose but as with everything else, there are always a few 'tards that will take advantage and ruin it for everyone else. What's new, the 'tards are everywhere, ya just gotta live with 'em.
So what do you do regarding news sites and forums? Do you sign up in order to leave a comment if you feel strong enough about a subject or are you just an anonymous poster ? Are you one of those cowardly 'tards that go off at the mouth and say things you wouldn't normally say because you can remain anonymous? Come on now, be honest, you know who you are

I agree with you Dogg, most of the trollers are nothing but losers who have no life. We don't wanna get rid of them, they boost our egos.
I have my own troll fan club
these people are everywhere Missb, theres no escaping them. in my line of business i see them face to face but i been online enough to know where the cowards are, i wish i could meet all of them in real life so i could teach them a lesson, i get threats all the time cos of who i am, but the funny thing is they never come through with it, all talk no action the internet is a place where people can put a cloak over their heads and hide, aint nothing gonna change that.

Oh, there's no doubt people say things online that they wouldn't say to someones face in a million years, we have one or two in particular that like to troll geekdrop frequently, for example. I'm not sure if I agree with forcing people to give up their positively identifying info in order to join. It has it's pro's and con's. One of the things that is great about the internet IS the ability to be anonymous. I got on the net when it was basically the wild wild west, and it was a great time. More and more it's becoming regulated and filled with ads, and frankly... starting to suck in comparison ... I can only imagine what it'll be like in say, 10 years as more things become regulated and our privacy slowly stripped away.
It's nice to be able to (easily) track down poopheads, but I think I'd give that up for the freedom (and comfort) of anonymity. With enough skill and resources it's already easy enough to track someone down in real life with enough motivation, and at the same time, no matter how much privacy is stripped away legally or by rules, there'll still always be ways to the skilled, or semi-skill, and motivated dootyheads to remain anonymous.
When it comes down to brass tacks though, it really doesn't matter what an anonymous flamer says for that exact reason ... it's all just bluster that they'd never say to you in real life, and it's their only way of attempting to cause you stress. And if they actually DID ever have the cahones to follow-up with the smacktalk in real life, there are ways to make them regret it.
