My insane cat has a new thing ... he constantly "grooms" the same area on the back of his left leg, the entire length of it, from paw to poopy spot. It's one long line of baldness there now, since he's licked all the hair away.
Any ideas on how to get him to stop so the hair'll all grow back? Maybe some vinegar mixed with water, so it tatses nasty to him, squirted on the back of his leg with a squirt gun? Or would it just be better to get him a membership to Hairclub for Cats?
I can't think of anything that'd be stressing him, he leads a pretty comfortable/happy life. The only thing I can think of might be that he has a fascination with some feral cats that come by everyday for the free eats placed out there for them, and for some reason he gets huffy with any dark colored cat(s) and just super-interested, (but not snotty) with any lighter colored cat(s). He patrols all of the windows obsessively right around the time they usually like to come.
I was thinking it might be some sort of irritation (he has no critters on him ) or an ache or something. I've noticed sometimes when a cat jumps off something (for example), sometimes they immediately lick a spot, like their paw for a quick sec, like it might be their way of acknowledging an 'ouchie' at the location of the pain. It's just wild how he's doing it in one long line, from stem to stern, on the back of the same leg and nowhere else.

Maybe call your vet and ask. Good luck!
Thanks, maybe I'll try the combo-approach. Load up a squirt gun with some of that bitter apple stuff and squirt him in the back of his leg when he walks by, and then hide the squirt gun behind my back and start whistling innocently when he looks back at me. If I just try to dab it on him, he'd just turn around at me and put up his dukes. He'll be havin' none of that.

Bitter Apple by Grannicks. They make one for cats and one for dogs, and it comes in either a spray or a "dabber"
This is most likely caused by some stressor in your cat's life. What has changed? New hours at your job, less hours at home, a new friend that kitty doesn't like too much, brought in a new pet?
Other possibilities that can cause a hot spot are: new food, a contact allergy or parasites. Have you changed foods? Used new laundry detergent or carpet freshener? Have you checked for fleas/mites?
