Microsoft is offering a new beta service to help people communicate during an "emergency". Microsoft Vine is a service that will allow you to sign up for emergency contacts. So that you can be alerted during one, and you can alert others. It's not just emergencies but things in general... school closings, canceled baseball practice, etc. You can choose to have the messages delivered to your email, cell phone, or even a landline. You can even have it set to "check in" with others while your away on vacation.
The hope is to have it set up to even send info during true emergencies, let loved ones know you're ok, and even send you instructions on how to respond. Read more about it here and sign up here

Seems like if spammers could exploit this, it'd be great for them, since the service will try all different methods, and not give up, like the Terminator, until the message gets delivered. They would need to do some sort of major identity verification for each user as they sign up.
I also just noticed a funny thing pranksters, and even unscrupulous types could take advantage of:
For example, some emergency messages might go to users' e-mail accounts or be sent as text messages. Some may go to regular telephones, and will get converted from text to speech if necessary.
Imagine all the stuff you could type in the app anonmously, that would go to your targets phone, and get converted to that fake, robot voice. Sounds like a lot of fun to be had there.

yer twisted...I like that
We so need a exploit for this one. Remember when Target had a thing you could have them send a wake up call on black friday? I had so much fun with that one. Lots of folks got 4am wake ups that morning

I read it and it sounds basically like a glorifed twitter. So it got to thinking would I ever use a service like this (at this point in time) - no probably not. Let see last few emergency's were hurricanes (back to back ones). Well we lost phone service, cell service, power and internet so we were pretty much SOL. When I was able to get service (my office got service first) we got word out. Normally when I send out emails and they go to more then one person I always send them BCC (simply because I despise spam). Well if a hurricane is coming then you will find I will send out a email to all that I need to saying that one is approaching and I will get word out ASAP when its done, that email I will address everyone in the "To:" area. Once I get though it I do a reply to all and woola they know were fine. Rule of thumb is during a hurricane we lose everything (including power) from a week to 2 weeks so really this service would not help anyways.
