Spring has sprung and it is officially kite season. I love to take my kids to the park or beach and watch them fly kites and learn how to maneuver them, cast them, and the art of gliding them to not destroy them should they lose flight.
We started our spring tradition at a local dollar store who had some inexpensive plastic kites for $1. It soon become a favorite past time for our family.
We then graduated to 2-line stunt kites of a bit higher price tag. These are just simply beautiful with their character and animation while in flight. soo much fun to master and fly
Our attempt this year will be to make our own along with the salvaged kites from last season. I'll have to post some pictures of our completed kites along with our investigation into which structures work best
Anyone else love to spend time kite flying? Any simple strcture kite plans fro my younger kids and more complex box structures fro my older ones?
Alright thats it .......... it's official we were separated at birth
cant say i know of any fancy plans for kite making but some of my fondest memories at my grandparents house is of flying my kite. they were always the cheapy plastic ones but my barbie kite kicked butt ok?! ha! i remember flying ot over the canal in the back of their house and it crash landed across the canal in a neighbors yard. i got it back but was so attached i freaked out a little about losing it "way" over there and having to go get it..... ha! i cant wait to bring my kids when theyre older. we have an awesome kite store on the beach here.
Ok here is some kite trivia......
Did you know for a few years it was illegal to fly a kit in Pakistan? Every year there are quite a few deaths there. They take kite flying seriously and well there string isn't always just string
One reason the pastime is so perilous is that some participants use kite strings made of metal, or coated with glass or abrasive chemicals. The aim is to slice the lines of rivals, so as to bring down and capture their kites, with wagers often riding on the outcomes of the aerial duels. Unfortunately, however, the necks of bystanders and motorcyclists have tended to get in the way, resulting in horrific, sometimes fatal injuries from road crashes and cut throats. To reduce the risk, bike and scooter riders have taken to fixing arched rods to their vehicles as makeshift protection against the lethal illegal kite strings.
Yikes huh

Ohhh I love this! Ok some know and some don't but I was a cub scout den leader for 9 years (hey 3 boys) and we made kites. The kids had a blast doing this too. We used plastic bags and made long tails. Here is a site that shows you how to do it (FYI we used the 13 gal kitchen trashbags with the draw strings for the tails)
How to Make a Kite Out of a Plastic Bag
If you go to Home Depot or Lowes you can get the wooden dowels for like .49 cents. I'll have to dig but I know I have pics somewhere of the kids flying them.
