Ok so how young is too young to start your child on a computer? My son was playing those learning games around 5 if my memory serves me which I think is young enough. Not that I'm against starting a kid off at a younger age. I think 1 or 2 is a little too young though, I mean do they even understand the whole concept of a computer at that age?
So how young is too young for your child?
"My baby is turning 1. It's time to get her a laptop.
This is pretty self-evident to me, but not to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends "no screen time" for children under 2 and at most 1 or 2 hours daily for kids.
You see, screens are evil. Screens are pernicious, soul-destroying things that, if left unchecked, will turn our daughters into half-blind, obese little monkeys who obsessively IM sexual predators while watching reruns of "My Super Sweet 16." At age 6."

My daughter was probably five when I started letting her play on the computer. She learned her way around it fairly quickly. I installed Tux Type so she can continue what they have her do at school. She is getting somewhat better at typing but really she just wants to go to Postopia or Club Pengiun. Recently I installed a Hannah Montana Linux into Virtual Box for her. It kind of sucks cause I haven't had the time to actually tweak it for her. The screen resolution has it a bit too small to use Firefox very well. This weekend I'll probably get it fixed up.
I limit her internet time just like I do TV. Typically it's one or the other. I'm usually in the room with her when she is on the internet. I have two computers set up near each other so I can play at the same time.
I started my daughter on Reader Rabbit at four...she picked up quickly...we adults tend to forget that children are sponges..

Kiddo is 2.5 y.o. and has been playing on this "Leap Frog ClickStart My first Computer" (for ages 3-6) he has seen family members use the computer and would mimic them and said that he wanted his own. well, we found one! he loves it! in just under 3 attempts he had mastered the mouse and in a little over a week he was showing off how he could recognize letters and numbers on the keyboard when prompted by the learning games.
awesome!

Karma, it works every time!
after i get mine? hehe. no in all seriousness, when he graduates high school.
until then my rule is going to be only using the 'family computer'......in the Living Room!
i have strong feelings about kids having too much unmonitored access to the internet and such....

ohhhhh good luck with that one - kids know they can pester the crap out of you till you break
and if all else fails call grandma and grandpa and cry to them (they give in even faster).

how cute is that! See my kids didn't have that cool stuff like that. I'm sure the mouse is the size for a childs hand too.

yeah baby droll and keyboards don't mix well plus kids like to bang things - not good.
I want to say for my oldest it was around 4 and that was because I didn't get my first home computer till he was in pre-school. now my younger 2 I would say around 3. I know my middle one was 3 for a fact because he had a speech delay issue and I got a program that had voice recognition that he would listen into the headphones and talk into the microphone. It was cute it was all built into a hat and it was like fun and games for him. My little guy I want to say around 3 also because I remember he loved this one Land Before time game.
