Attempted to restore Nook to factory settings and now it won't turn on. Purchased Nook with something called cyanoboot on it and now screen is locked. Does this mean the reboot procedure fried my Nook?

Many thanks for this -- I had tried other peoples' ideas and none worked (or required an "deregister" which I cannot do any more with the 1st edition. I wanted to erase everything before I send it back to B&N to get my $25 Nook 7...

The manual restore worked, but I had to do the holding for 12 seconds 10 times rather than 6 times. Maybe I messed up the first time and had to do it four more times or something. I don't really know, but it did reset to factory settings. However, I could never get the reader to connect to my internet. So I cannot register or use it. Thanks for your help in resetting.

Factory reset 2.2 worked like a charm. I actually tried the "power + <" method first and it seemed to just turn it off. Then, while off, I used "Power button + n-home button" and it booted up asking if I wanted to reset. Yay! Been trying to get this stupid thing to successfully do the settings menu reset for 3 days. I think the problem may be that the Nook is too old to use the available network protocols - so even tho it connects, maybe it's not even at "G" or "N" level. regardless - I can dump the thing now!! Thank you.
