Well I'm finally going to do it folks, next year sometime i'm planning to drive cross country from Los Angeles back to VA with a couple of friends. it will be my first time doing this and I would like to do Route 66 at some point. I'm looking for some tips, do's and dont's, helpful hints to make this trip go smoother, i would also like suggestions on where to stop along the way, (planning on taking the southern route) such as national parks, areas of interest, as well as how to do it all on a budget, realistically how much money would I really need? I'm planning to do it in 10 days or thereabouts, is that enough time? this is a dream of mine so i want it all to go smoothly and enjoy every minute of it. I'm so excited
thanks smartmom i think so too. we have the GPS going on my gf has one (its a garmin too) so thats one thing out of the way, great link btw, i just realized that Route 66 is no longer a major highway WOW its more of an off the road thing, which makes this more exciting, im looking forward to meeting the locals and going to the dive bars in these off the beaten track towns i just cant wait!!!!!
To save money try to load up the cooler and pack snacks to eat along the way, if you stop 3 times a day to eat its gonna cost you so stopping just once for an early dinner say (early bird specials) will save a ton, it'll save you on time too. If you can, stop at the grand canyon and take in its beauty, its amazing.
i would have no problems camping at all and thats a great site missb. what i might have a problem with though is being attacked by a bear theres been a lot of stories lately with ppl being attacked in camp grounds

You are going to have SO MUCH FUN! First make sure you own (or rent) a GPS. Make sure you get a good one. I have a Garmin and love it. I have a friend who has some off brand and the lady talking on it sounds like she is on her death bed with emphysema or something.
I found this site and it looks interesting:
