"An Arizona bill that would impose some of the toughest immigration laws in the country is generating a storm of controversy nationwide as it tracks toward the governor's desk.

The Arizona Senate voted Monday to approve the final version of the bill, which was voted up on a party-line vote by the state House last Tuesday. If it's signed by Gov. Jan Brewer, it would give police in the state broad new powers to arrest and charge people suspected of being in the country illegally."

Seems like this new bill is stirring up quite a lot of controversy. Some people think it will lead to racial profiling, and that it's unconstitutional. So not only is there an uproar but some are threatening hunger strike, really? What's that gonna do? I don''t Know

"The bill contains several provisions. Among them, it would create a new state misdemeanor crime for failing to carry alien registration documents; allow officers to arrest immigrants unable to show documents proving their legal residence; allow people to sue if they feel a government agency has adopted a policy that hinders immigration enforcement; prohibit people from blocking traffic when they seek or offer day labor services on street corners; and make it illegal for people to knowingly transport illegal immigrants."

Now I don't know maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything wrong with this bill. It's quite clear that the problem along our borders (especially the one with Mexico) is out of hand and something needs to be done, this seems like a good way to start to me.

What do you think, you think it's a good idea? Will it actually work on the illegal immigration problem, or will it make matters worse?

See I'm on the fence with this one. Yes I think we have a immigrant problem and it needs to be taken care of. However do you just give officers any reason to stop and question? I mean I live in FL where we have lots and lots of immigrants but we also have a huge legal hispanic community. I have alot of good friend who are Cubans (American's now) and I would feel bad if they were pulled over all the time and questioned. I think it would be better that they can be questioned if they were being pulled over for another reason.

The "suspicion" of being illegal that makes this wrong. Just because there is an illegal immigration problem(and really when hasn't there been?) doesn't give the police the power to stop anyone they suspect of being illegal on a whim. What does an illegal immigrant look like? if I lined up a bunch of mexicans would they be able to pick out the illegal ones based on looks alone? I think not.
This would infringe upon the rights of citizens who might be going to work, or simply taking a walk in their own neighborhood, to not be harassed by the cops just because they look a certain way. Unacceptable.

I do see both of your points, but is it really that bad for a cop to stop someone and ask them for ID? I thought everyone was suppose to carry ID regardless of their status? I wouldn't have any problem if a cop stopped me and asked me for ID even if I was doing nothing wrong.

Because it isn't nazi Germany thats why.
Yes I have my ID, because I need for quite a few things, not because a cop may stop me. Its not a crime not to have ID on you. They have a right to stop and ask if they have a suspicion of a crime, but this law broadens that to unacceptable levels.
By the way this is the same way they've been getting away with harassing black folks in NYC for years..."we have a suspicion of a black male between 5'2" and 7'8", so they'll use that as an excuse to harass anyone.

Well the way I see it is if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. I don't really see anything wrong about the bill itself, the problem is, like it always is, is some cop abusing the power he has, I think stopping someone, asking them for ID, seeing the ID then moving on is not a big deal. But of course there will be cops that will harass you just because they can.

The problem is the volume of hispanic peple in the state...which is a lot. any one of them could be stopped and harassed just for being what they are.

I think that's just the way it is, the illegals in Arizona are hispanic so yes they will be targeted, just like it was after 9/11, every muslim that looked suspect was targeted then, better safe than sorry.

Sorry about what? are they trying to blow people up like the Muslims?
I guess we'll just disagree on it, I've never been one to give the state more power to bugger people especially when there isn't a safety issue at hand.

No, I meant safe than sorry regarding the 9/11 incident. But if the goal is to be rid of illegal aliens, (who bum off the state and lets face it, a lot of them are criminals and are not productive and remain a cost to the taxpayers) then they need to do something. So if they rape, rob and kill would you think differently?

hi The Glove

I understand your wanting to take a humanistic approach, but look at it from this perspective;

I don't know if you have children, and a family that you support, but let's for the purposes of this discussion assume that you do. Let's say that you bought a house, that you worked many years for, and will continue to pay for, for years, maybe even the rest of your life. You bought a new car that you make payments on, and so on. You work hard everday to earn money to support yourself, your children and family. You do everything by the book, you pay those expensive taxes Uncle Sam takes from you, those outrageous health insurance payments, those crushing medical bills if you or your family suddenly take ill, and you're barely scratching by, carrying a mountain of debt, as most do ...

So along comes a family of illegal immigrants, usually mostly men btw, and since we're talking about Arizona, we'll say Mexican illegal immigrants in this example, and they decide, against your will, to move into that new house of yours, all 10 of them. Then your boss at your job hears that he can (illegally under the table) hire them all, at half the price you're willing to do the same job, so you get fired and they take your place. Then they become ill, go to the emergency room, take up the emergency room staff's time working on them instead of your 9 year old daughter, when she happens to take ill and end up in that same emergency room 20 minutes later. So she gets worse while they work on those new 'family members' of yours instead, seeing as there's only so many hospital beds and staff there. But it gets better ... once they get all patched up, you get to pay for not only your daughters outrageous medical bills, but also their medical bills. On top of all of this, the rest of the liberal country is actually fighting for them to be allowed to do this to you, and you aren't allowed to kick them out of your house, you simply have to accept it. I think the overall picture should be becoming apparent at this point ...

Sure, you may not actually 'feel' this much direct pain, because you may not have a family to support. The rest of the country helps you pay all of this from the larger pool of taxes instead of directly from your paycheck, and so on, however, we're also talking about MILLIONS of these illigeal immigrants living in the U.S., racing across the border, by the thousands every single day, draining from that large pool of our taxes.

See, there are many ways to cause damage, and it's not always by killing and physical assaults and/or damage. There's also the draining of our economy. There's the ghetto's they inevitably create due to lack of money. There's the loss of property values due to them basically taking over a town or city causing it's residents to essentially flee to other areas, and so on. There's one town near me that was a mixed race town, and a pretty nice one at that, about 10 or more years ago, and now it literally looks like a run down, little Mexico from the influx of illegal immigrants. All of the signs on stores have turned into spanish signs, most of the restaurants have turned into mexican restaurants (the real kind, that sell things like cow tongue, not like a Pepe's or a Taco Bell) and so on. Even the black population is down in that town.

Yes, some of them will work their asses off, but where does that money go? Often times sent back to Mexico to feed their Mexican families. Not spent in the U.S. so at least the sales taxes can go back into our system. And since it's being done under the table, they don't have taxes taken out of their pay, to help support even the smallest thing, such as that visit to the hospital.

No one is arguing about the Mexican (or other nationalities) that come into the country by the book, legally. This is a fight about illegal immigrants, who are basically parasites. And as the above picture shows, where they're flipping off the camera, they often do it defiantly, saying "Screw You America". There is much more to this than just 'racial profiling' and 'harrassing some poor latino walking down the street, minding his own business, whistling dixie' ...
