They may verify that it is a legit copy of windows on it. Upgrading your system to a newer OS shouldn't effect it now if they have to do a reset then it would be set back to XP and you would have to upgrade it again. With it just being the power button they shouldn't but just to be safe you should back up your system. If you don't remember the windows7 key then you can do this to find it:

I've shipped laptops in for repairs (granted not Dell but HP and IBM) and only once have I had them restore it back to factory settings.

They shouldn't but I have always been in the camp of better safe then sorry.

They prob won't look to see if it's legit or not, I doubt they really care all that much about protecting another companies software, but I agree w/SM on making sure to backup everything important just in case. Never know if you're gonna get some confused employee who thought it was ok to wipe it clean during the fix or something.

They replaced the LCD Bezel, the LCD Cover and replaced a missing key cover, the total was $172, which I won't complain about, at least it was repairable.
