Debating the two has been a topic of discussion in my house the past 2 months or so. My middle son has saved his money and is looking to make a purchase but which one. Currently he has a ipod 80GB. Its seen better days and is having some issues so he wants to up grade to the world of touch. Our house has had a love hate relationship with ipod and itunes. Last year I made the jump from a ipod 80GB to a Zune 120GB and I've been very happy with it.
So my son has been looking and reading up on them. What has really annoyed me is when you go to read about them you find that the author is generally really slanted towards one side and basically compares the two only to slam the other one. Now am I going to say I think one is better then the other one? Well I do have my preferences but I also know what I may like another may not, its not to say that one is so much better then the other but more what you need in a player. Today I was doing my reading on the web when I landed on PCMagazine's smackdown of the two players. Aww finally someone who puts out the information and lets you decided. They did a wonderful youtube video comparing the two
They also did a side by side comparison of the two players
So there you have it. Now has son made up his mind completely kinda sorta but he wants to visually see them in the store. Unfortunately after a disappointing day of looking yesterday he was still unable to see one, 3 stores later. Now he has decided that if he goes with the Zune he will order one so he can get the cool free artwork on it.
Yeah that is disappointing but the zune HD is new to the market and ipod currently rules on that one especially with the iphone and being on the market for some time. I think in time Zune will catch up but they really lack on that right now.
So after much research, debating and studying son and I made the purchase tonight...we got THIS the $399. one
Woo! He'll LOVE it.

yeah as much as I love my zune and as much as I really do hate itunes you cant deny the apps. Apple has them and zune doesn't. Now zune does have the radio but really do you need the radio if your going to load if full of your music? Another huge point is that apple has 64GB where as the largest zune was 32GB. So in the end apple won out - that was/is hard for me the anti apple girl to admit
Now have him install Fring then get an iPhone ear buds set and he can make calls on his Touch over Wifi. Plus Skype was approved. He'll have to have the ear buds though cause he'll need the mic. As Dogg asked above the Touch and Iphone are darn near the same just sans phone. Basically that's it. But over wifi you can fix that. Ihave to say too that my 5th generation iPod is still as good as ever. A friend has a 2nd generation (I think) that I fixed for him. It worked fine but he ended up getting a Touch. It still work he just doesn't use it anymore. If I remember correctly one of those iPods got washed? Not much can with stand that.
Making calls on an iPhone is no worse than any other cell phone. Assuming the call doesn't keep getting dropped. Stupid AT&T.
Oh yeah one was washed and yes that would kill any player and the other ones just died or had more errors then working. Hummm th skype sounds intresting I'll have to check it out more when we get it in
Shoot, I meant to say have him get a Google Voice account. Then he can call or text for free. He can use Safari to access his GV account and send sms and call right from Safari no extra apps needed. Still need the iPhone ear buds.
Can the same apps be installed on the iTouch (even if you can't really use them?), also, does the iPhone feel as square and boxy when held up to your ear as if you were holding a regular iPod/iTouch to your ear? It seems like it would to me, so when I hold my iPod to my ear pretending it's a phone, it just feels kinda ... weird, . LLike, big, clunky and non-sleek. It wouldn't prevent me from getting one though.
My iPod battey might be going right now, but that's about it. I just bought a new battery for it that I still have to install, but it was only about $3. No biggy.
It does feel the same holding them both up to your ear. As far as apps go i would have to say probably. I installed an app that was only compatible with a 3G[s]. It was a video sharing app. Didn't work of course. The only problems I've had with installing apps was related to firmware versions. If it's designed for the newest firmware it won't let you install onto a device that needs to be updated.
But if you're in the market look up the Nokia N900. I'm considering selling my iPhone on ebay to break my contract and get one when it comes out.
Ahahahahahaha. I lol'd when I saw the 75,000 apps on the iphone..... and 9 on Zune. Though apps don't mean anything to some people, so...
