The president of Honduras (neighbor to El Salvador & the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala, and Nicaragua) was arrested and put on a plane to Costa Rica in Central America's first military coup since the cold war.
President (ex President?) Manuel Zelaya (who is a Hugo Chavez associate) was hoping for a referendum that would help him be able to run for president another term, when soldiers entered his home and placed him under arrest. There is a 4 year presidential term limit in Honduras and any revisions to this constitutional law is forbidden. Congress has appointed Roberto Micheletti as the new president who has threatened to jail Zelaya if he tries to return, all the same while that Zelaya is threatening to overthrow the new leader.
The US was/is against the military coup and have called for the return of the former president. Protestors and Zelaya supporters had set up barricades and blocked roads leading to the presidential palace.
This could get ugly very quickly and presidents from around Latin America were meeting in Nicaragua in hopes to find a resolution.
Definately not bookin my next vacay flight there!
it's craziness. and a shame too cause most of the Central American countries are beautiful. gorgeous beaches (*sighs*), delicious weather, volcanoes, nature, history...they're just so dangerous to visit nowadays...and with this...well, i'm just hoping it doesn't escalate and leave the parameters of Honduras...

Yea, I think we need to just nuke it, turn it into a parking lot, and then take it over so we get all those sweet beaches and great weather to ourselves. Make it a tourist destination.
The U.S. needs to back off. This was a good thing. and a funny one, hehe. but seriously, they're just making up for missing the mark with Iran.
My grandma is from/lives down there, and is getting remarried there in a week, our family is flying down...i hope to speak with her today and will report back about the "unrest."
~karma: i'm countin on it~
ohhhhhhhhhhh this can't be a good time to travel down there. I would be nevous as hell. How long are you staying? Any chances of grandma tying the knot here?
i re-read what i said and the wording came off strong-- from what i heard everyone was relieved to get the guy out.
and i chose a while back to not make the trip for the wedding. all the things i've heard and seen over the years...i have a young child, i wouldn't go - with or without him - i wouldn't go. if that were not the case (if i didn't have a child) then i would probably go if this 'unrest' thing is just hype. the rest of my family is going as of now, my grandma and i are very close and she understands and agrees with my decision.
i have no idea if they'd consider a US wedding.
but i am trying to get a hold of her, to see what all is going on down there (lives in the capital, teguc)
MIW is right, it has been very dangerous down there, my gma carries a pistol in her purse and has had multiple family members kidnapped, or killed to rob them. But the feeling we all had was that recently it had been good down there.
I'll update....

yeah they dragged the guy out of bed and flew him off in his jammies...
what a vision..
do let us know. i have family in the country next door. lots of family. i'm just hoping nothing gets out of hand in general.
With this particular problem you can't believe everything you read, and Hondurans posted opinions seem to have vanished from the internet, when you click on them they don't work--strange. BUT i found these articles and THESE are representative:

Oh yeah this is not going to be pretty at all. Nothing like a all out nasty war breaking out, lets just hope we stay out unless it involves our country. Scary times for sure ahead
