Went to the midnight showing in my town. Three screens, all were sold out. Apparently only the 3rd Star Wars had more presales...
Anyway, I really liked the movie. I really did. Even though I'm about to bash it... I did! As a movie, in chain with the other movies, it was funny, dark, romantic, and sad. The emotions really go back and forth. But, as ususal, they killed the book. They totally re-wrote the last... 7-8 chapters and left out a major part. I've grown used to this, and expected it, so I didn't let it affect what I thought of the movie. YOU WILL HATE THIS MOVIE if you go in expecting anything like the book. It really takes the basic backbone of the story and runs with it.
I didn't like how funny it was. Afterall, this is the darkest book out of the movies that have come out so far. Yet I found myself laughing though many parts, something I never did in the books.
There was WAY too much romance... I mean, in the book, most of Harry's feeling for a certain girl were internal, but in the movie it seemed like they were in love from the beginning. Actually, that whole romance played out 100% differently then it did in the book,
The two and a half hour movie passed by quickly, so don't worry about being bored.
Okay, now that I've trashed the movie, let me try and bring it back up.
The graphics were amazing. Three things stick out in my mind: A skating snowman on a cake, an awesome hourglass, and the part where Harry and Dumbledore are out by the water, and also where Dumbledore throws an awesome spell of fire. They really did a great job with the little details.
Some of the funny parts were really funny. Lavender Brown cracked me up through the entire movie.
The parts that they changed seemed to work. I wasn't happy they were changed, but they did do a good job with the story.
Like the internet says, this movie picks up assuming that you already know everything Harry Potter. There is no explination for noobs, which I liked. I'm a hard core fan that has gone to 4 midnight book parties and 3 midnight movie showings... I know who these people are.
WOW. These kids have grown up. It's so funny to watch the first movie and then this one. 10000000% change. Ginny is HOT. Way to go Harry! Haha
Overall, it was a great movie. I left happy. Though, I went in knowing not to expect the book that I had read 100 times. If you go in with this thought, then you will be okay. If not, and you just re-read the book before going to the movie, prepare to be upset. But if you are a fan of the series, like romance, dark drama, comedy, and something a little magical, go see this movie. It was good enough that I want to go and see it again this weekend.
Again, I expected lots of changes and mass parts cut out... Oh well. If you haven't read the book, go see the movie and love it.
You must be talking about the 7th book, which will be split between two movies, coming out in 2010 and 2011. I couldn't be happier. There is SO much detail in the last book that is critical to understand what is going on, they really needed more time.
I'm going to give it an 8. I walked away happy and wanting to see it again. People who go in with the wrong perspective will give it around a 3-4.

Thanks for the honest review!
I too don't like it when they veer too much away from the books. When they do that, i spend most of the movie miffed.
That being said i read the book a long time ago so maybe i won't remember what's different!

The movie looks great and I guess since I didn't read the book I'm sure I'll love it. I know like you said you can not really ever compare books to movies. I think if they tried to say inline with the books they movies would be 2.5 days long and not the 2.5 hours. However I do hate when they really take a 150 degree turn on things.
I heard rumors that this maybe a two part movie that there might be another part coming out at a later date - did you hear anything on that?
so on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being high) what would you give it?
