I think everyone can agree that it is so tragic in Haiti right now. It is nice to see that everyone is pitching in to help. I know that Obama has pledged quite a bit of money and we have sent troops down to help. Now Obama is allowing Haitians to come to the US.

STATEMENT FROM HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY JANET NAPOLITANO

“As part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to assist Haiti following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake, I am announcing the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals who were in the United States as of January 12, 2010. This is a disaster of historic proportions and this designation will allow eligible Haitian nationals in the United States to continue living and working in our country for the next 18 months. Providing a temporary refuge for Haitian nationals who are currently in the United States and whose personal safety would be endangered by returning to Haiti is part of this Administration’s continuing efforts to support Haiti’s recovery.

“At this moment of tragedy in Haiti it is tempting for people suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake to seek refuge elsewhere. But attempting to leave Haiti now will only bring more hardship to the Haitian people and nation. The international community has rallied to deliver relief to Haiti. Much has already arrived and much more is on its way. The Haitians are resilient and determined and their role in addressing this crisis in their homeland will be essential to Haiti’s future.

“It is important to note that TPS will apply only to those individuals who were in the United States as of January 12, 2010. Those who attempt to travel to the United States after January 12, 2010 will not be eligible for TPS and will be repatriated.

“The Department of Homeland Security continues to extend sympathy to our Haitian neighbors and support the worldwide relief effort underway in every way we can. Four Coast Guard cutters have arrived in Haiti, in addition to a variety of Coast Guard assets that were already in the area to support military air traffic control, conduct damage assessments and rescue people in need of assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work closely with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State Department—the lead U.S. federal agencies in the response—while coordinating the deployment of state and local Urban Search and Rescue Teams from across the country to Haiti and standing by to provide food, water and other resources as requested. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has provided aircraft to support response efforts.

“Haitians in the U.S. who are eligible to apply for TPS should go to www.uscis.gov or call the toll-free USCIS Forms Hotline (800) 870-3676.”

Now I live in South Florida where we have already a very strong Haitian community. Today on facebook my local news station posted a story on Obama now letting the Haitians come over. At first I was shocked at the responce that was left on the story. After I read all the comments it did make me think. Can we really afford more illegal immigrants in S. Florida? No Do you really think that after 18 months they are going to want to go home? No Does Obama have any plans to export the Haitians to other parts of the country so that Florida is not so burdened? No

I have very mixed feelings on this. My heart breaks for them. As a mom I see those children and if I lived there I would want my kids to have every opportunity that they could get. I'll admit it does scare me that we opened our boarders because who are we kidding they won't go home after 18 months, home to what? Even prior to the earthquake they wanted to leave and come to the US.

What do you think?

Dominican Republic doesn't even want them and they are on the same island. As poor as they are they keep breeding. Helping them is one thing but bringing them here is another thing.

Stop breeding? So should their country just die out? Loose all of their history and culture? It is an ignorant and thoughtless statement. One day with help from the global community and the new generations of Haitians they will better their country. Maybe not in our lifetimes but I have faith it will happen one day.

Repatriated means we will send them back to where they are from if they attempt to enter the US now. So Obama isn't bringing Haitians here. The ones that are already here can stay here a bit longer if they need to. If I were in Europe and my state was decimated by a natural disaster and there was nothing for me to go back to except death and destruction I would be more than grateful at the opportunity to extend my stay until things at home improved. Now in my current state of being I would go home because I am an able body young man capable of helping fix things. Not everyone is though. I think this is a wonderful gesture and more than appropriate. I hope we don't have to become victims of these types of natural disasters to start showing compassion for other human beings regardless of which continent they were born on.

No, I don't think the country should just die out. What I do think is that if you have 2 kids you can't afford to feed them the last thing you need to do is have more. Oh wait, if you come to America and you have more kids we will give you more money. Once they figure that out they just start having more kids, after all its a job they get paid at. You think after 18 months they will go home, you're crazy. Yes lets leave Disneyland to go back to the trailer park, its the same thing. As for 'it only applies the ones already here", what like their not going to still come and say "I've been here for 6 months already". Sorry I was unemployed for 9 months and every job I had to fight illegals who would do it for less. Have you ever thought maybe its Darwinism?

Do you know for a fact that a large amount of these refugees are having kids when they ought not to? Are you sure they'll come here and have more just to live on the handouts?are you sure none of them want to return to their homeland when they can? If you say yes to any of these I'll say you're wrong and know I have the right of it.

When you were unemployed for 9 months was it Darwinism? Or maybe you were lazy and didn't try hard enough. 9 months in a very long time to be without a job, I find it hard to believe that someone can't find ANY work in that time frame. Surely you could have found ONE job that didn't have a disproportionate number of illegals to take your birthright? Surely you could ahve come across at least 1 boss who prefered English speaking native born Americans to work for him. The fact is, is that those illegals got the jobs because they were hungrier for it. They know the value of a dollar better than a lot of Americans because they werent born in a place that had so much.

Darwinism? I fail to see how evolution ties into a natural disaster. Evolution is a slow process. A natural disaster happen in an instant. If you mean survival of the fittest I still feel that is a flawed thought process. The "fittest" person can be struck down in an accident while the "least fittest" could narrowly escape unscathed by mere luck.

Unfortunately birth control is probably not readily available in Haiti. But I'm sure you , my friend, would have no problem being abstinent for your entire life after having 1 or 2 children.

In a perfect world, neither them or you would be 'making a bunch of babies'.

If you took the time to read what I wrote, I said if they're willing to work and pay taxes ect; which means they would be able to provide for themselves and their families.

If you misword me like that again I won't answer, I don't argue with fools Wink

My reply was toward the anonymous poster who mentioned abstinence. This isn't a perfect world though and you can see what already happens with way too many Mexican familys. In a time in the United States where we're already too low on jobs for the people already living here, where do you expect us to find more jobs for them as well?
