Am
erica...

We're "broke", can't help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans, Homeless, etc...

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti, Chile, and Turkey...

Our retired seniors living on a 'fixed income' receive no aid or get any breaks, while our government and religious organizations pour Hundreds of Millions of $'s and Tons of Food into Foreign Countries!

We have thousands of adoptable, sometimes abused children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans. It has even become somewhat of a fashion statement for celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Madonna, knowing that the general American public looks up to celebrities examples'....

The United States of America, a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed hungry, Elderly going without 'needed' meds, your everyday person unable to financially keep their heads above water, losing their homes, not seeking medical help when needed due to inability to pay their own medical bills and health insurance, and mentally ill without any treatment whatsoever - etc., etc...

YET...

They have a 'Benefit' for the People of Haiti on 12 TV stations, ships and planes lining up with food, water, shelter, clothes, bedding, and free doctors and medical supplies..

They saturate the daily television commercials and magazines with the sad faces of people and children in foreign countries, beggin for everyone in America to send their donations to them...

Famous musicians throw benefits where they earn no money for a single performance (no big deal when they already make millions), and all proceeds go to either help rebuild or feed and support a foreign country.

Imagine if the *U.S GOVERNMENT* gave 'us' the same support they give to other countries. Imagine if the musicians and celebrities threw benefits for Americans in need instead...

Sad isn't it??

Re: Something to think about and agree or disagree.

Questions like this are, and dont take offense to this, erroneus.

I know you're heart is in the right place, and that you want to help those who have served us...I agree with you, but it's not really a question of one or the other.
It's our responsibility as the big boy on the block to help our neighbors in need. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and when some place like that has a disater, its our moral obligation to help them, regardless of the problems in our own country.
We have problems to fix, no place is perfect. But there is no good reason for us not to help our neighbors at their most needy times because of that. We're lucky enough to live in a place where we have the resources and the freedom and the will to actually make changes to the system; few places are as lucky.
There is nothing sad about helping those who need it badly when you can easily do so. It would be sad if we didn't

Re: Something to think about and agree or disagree

I completely agree with candyhart. I like The Glove's idea too but the flaw with that thinking is this......lets think of America as "dad", the pillar of strength, father who teaches his children right from wrong, has a well paying career, etc.

Now lets think what if dad became ill himself? And his own children. And at the same time his elderly parents are eating dog food because they can't afford real food, while living in a run down one room apartment, in a poor, dangerous neighborhood, they're not sure they can pay next months rent for. One of his children has schitzophrenia and is living on the cold, ruthless streets. And dad's job is about to lay him off, with no hope of finding a job to replace it any time soon. Everyone else hates dad, and the stronger men out there see that he's in really bad shape, and may soon decide to attack him while he's broke and ill, taking over everything he has.

Should dad skip taking care of his own illnesses, or his childrens in order to send his only, limited income (which in the current case we'd also have to pretend that dad is in extreme debt, borrowing from anyone he can, for example China, even though they're the "enemy", sort of like if dad borrowed all of his money from the mob) to other peoples children, or to help rebuild a neighbors house or yard instead, even if that neighbor needed help?

Yes, IF dad is healthy and can afford to help thy neighbor, he should, but if dad is tremendously ill, or his children, or his own house is in dire need of repair, I believe dad should attend to his own to make it the pillar of strengthneeded again in order to be strong enough to help others later.

Re: Something to think about and agree or disagree

If dad in your scenario is the U.S., his sickness is only relative and isn't even in the same ballpark as a country whose citizens are lucky if they have any access to things like running water or modern medicine.
This brings me back to what I originally said: that it's not really a matter of one or the other. In fact, sending relief aid to an imporverished nation can be rather easy; all you really need to do is throw money and food at the problem. The problems Candy mentioned before are institutional and can and should be dealt with, but it really doesn't have a bearing on whether or not we help a place like Haiti.
Some might not like it, but it's the old power and responsibility cliche. The amount of money and food we have, not to mention our unparelleled abilty to generate capital, makes the situation a moral and logical no brainer. Thats just me though.

Money spent on aid to other countries is a small spoonful in a bucket compared to our wasteful entitlement programs which have historically been written with holes that allow widespread abuse. That's what happens when complicated bills are rushed through houses and hurriedly signed into law without intelligent people picking them apart and thinking them through first. Take away the deadbeats in this country that are taking advantage of the system and we wouldn't need tax increases to cool down debt.

Watch what happens when the healthcare bill comes into full-effect. Ever hear the term "wait until the other shoe drops"? There will be a hailstorm of boots raining down on taxpayers.

You are so right about all of that! My only comment would be to say that even a small spoonful to those needy in our own country would be a hugh spoonful to them! Thanks for your comment!

Re: Something to think about and agree or disagree

Yes, I should have made reference to the people in the US that are actually needy and do not have means of support through no fault of their own. I do wonder about our govt's priorities when seeing the dollar amount pouring into other countries' problems and then seeing the poverty here.

It comes down to management. Our govt is a terrible manager of money and programs. Always has been. Something that large is impossible to manage and that is one of many good reasons that makes the case of having a *smaller government*.
