I recently bought a 55 inch Samsung LED Television model UN55B8000 and figured it was worthy of a review up here on the drop. I won't beat around the bush here. This tv is SWEET! Not only is it ultra thin being a mear 1.2 inches thick but the picture is simply amazing! But what I am really happy about is the network capabilities that this thing has.
I have if hard wired into my home network and let me tell you it is cool. You do have the option of doing wireless as well with a wifi modual (sold sepereately) but I like hard wireing when I can. You may be asking "What can you do with a TV that is connected to your home network?" Well I'm glad you asked!
First off there is an internet button on your remote. And what this will give you is a bar at the bottom of your screen. On this bar are all the widgets that you choose to download. You download them right from your tv. See below photo.
Here is a shot of what youtube looks like. Yep you can browse youtube videos right from your tv! So sweet.
Another cool thing about networking your TV is that you can utilize the media you have stored on your computer. I have a 2008 server running at my house that I shared my photo, music, and video directories using a program called PCshare that came with the TV. Verry simple application and took no time to use. Here is what the menu looks like when you pull up your home network files.
And this is when you go into the movie view.
Here's a quick shot of the port I wired up.
You can also plug in a usb device and view your pictures, music, and video right from a thumb drive or any usb drive. It looks just like the home network view. But you hit a button and choose your usb device instead. Verry slick.
Anyway I guess the only negetive thing I can say about this tv is that the built in sound isn't the greatest. But I have my surround hooked up so I don't even really use that. I highly recomend this TV to anyone that is looking or in the market for something new!
Thats sharp! What other widgets are available besides youtube?
Tell you the truth I havn't really looked. I just added the sports one. I'll look at the gallery and report back tonight when I get home. but in my screen shot you can see some of them. There's the sports one, weather, youtube news, finance, Flicker. I'll have to look at the rest.
I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money.''
That is nice ... dangit .. now I have to buy one ...
At first thought the YouTube thing didn't really phase me, but now that I think about it, there's a TON of cool stuff that could be watched on your TV from Youtube. Can it connect to say, Yahoo streaming shows, and Netflix? UFC PPV events get broadcast on Yahoo sports streaming.
I've read some people doing something with Netflix with it but not sure exactly what I can do with that. I just got it and still playing with it really. The youtube is pretty cool being able to do that from my tv. I just love the fact taht i can download something and watch it now without having to mess with anything.
I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money.''
Can ya surf the net on it?
don't think there is an actuall browser. Just the widgets wich will let you do diffrent things.
I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money.''
