Ok I think the concept of take you kid to work is great if you have a job that permits it. Taking your kid to work if your a air traffic controller at one of the busiest airports is just not a good idea. Well one air traffic controller at JFK (New York) took his kid to work and let him actually direct planes. Here is the audio of it:

The FAA has released the following statement:
"Pending the outcome of our investigation, the employees involved in this incident are not controlling air traffic. This behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism expected from all FAA employees."

I heard this this morning on the radio, completely unacceptable, even for me hearing the little kids voice directing traffic was so distracting, I can't imagine what it was like for someone actually flying a plane. This dumb father should be held completely accountable. Idiot!

I agree with it not being acceptable. I first read the story on my New facebook and I'm kinda shocked on the reactions of the folks - so see no problem with this. I would say its a 50/50 split on the matter. Here are some of the comments:

Its not like the kid broke in and took over the tower. It was like a" take your kids to work" thing. The parent was telling the child what to say verbatim. Innapropriate- Maybe Dangerous- Maybe? Keep in mind its the pilot in commands final decision weather to taxi the aircraft.. At His discretion. Yet a child can legally fly and taxi and aircraft at the same airport. But can't talk on a radio?????

What in the world is wrong with all of you people - there are earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, famine in third world countries, homeless people throughout our county, state and nation, unemployment is despicably high, and all we have to get excited about is a kid in a tower repeating his parent? Do you really think this is such a monstrous news ... See Morestory? Toyota, Ford, Honda and now Nissan are having safety issues left and right (not to mention stopping and going), and I bet there were no children involved in that problem. What harm was done? Realistically, what harm COULD have been done? The kid was not left alone to make any decisions on where to direct the plane, what speed to command the pilot to fly, which runway to use, what order to land and/or take off in! What would be the difference if it was a trainee doing the exact same thing? Just because it is an adult voice instead of a child parroting the trainer, does that really make it any safer?

My reply:
yes it is dangerous. First not everyone can understand kids - they don't speak as clear (this was a really young child). Second the kid was joking on the air with a airmexico pilot. Would you put your loved ones in a plane at the busiest airport directed by a kid? The parent should loose their job so should the supervisor who approved it. Lives could have been lost - he was lucky.

I completely agree with your reply, it was reckless and no you can't understand a child completely, especially over a radio, sometimes its hard enough to understand an adult. In doing this he also made light of the importance of his job and had no regard for the peoples lives he put at stake. Yes there are probably a lot more important things going on in the world that deem more attention than this, however, if a crash had occured because of this incompetence, it would have made worldwide headlines, and then what???
