This past week I purchased a Sony HD video camera. Its easy to use and I really like it...until I found it uses only .MTS format. Well Sony isn't the only one who uses this so does Cannon. Let me tell you I'm not so thrilled with that. First you can't upload to YouTube and it wont play with VLC Media player (unless you like choppy videos). It does however play with Windows Live Media Player. You can edit it with "Windows Live Movie Maker" but then it saves it as a .wlmp format. So I though OK let me just convert it. That was not so easy to do I found. I have two PAID converter programs and they did not work on it. I googled my heart out and found some other paid ones that worked but who wants to spend $50. and the "trial" only converts 1/2 of the video over (aggravating). Well after dozens of converters I found a great one and its FREE!

Free HD Converter 1.2

Free HD Converter is a freeware designed to convert all your MTS and M2TS files coming from your HD camcorders as Canon or Sony. You will be able to convert to AVI, MPEG2, DVD format, Ipod, Mp4, Wmv. Very fast conversion and completely free to use.

Here is a screen shot:

Yes this program also works in Windows 7 Big Grin

I also found you can convert them in bulk - Why pay when you can get it FREE - I Freeware!

You know I have a JVC camcorder and ran into a similar problem. JVC uses a .mod extension for video files. They play just fine in most players, VLC etc. But only JVC's video editing software can edit them. I found out that .mod is really just the same as mpeg. In fact, you can rename the file and change mod to mpeg and it will now work in any editing software that supports mpeg with no problems. I wrote a batch extension edit .bat and once I get all of my .mod files in a folder I copy the .bat into that folder and run it converting all the .mod to .mpeg in a go. I really wish that they could all agree on a universal format so that us paying customers can actually use (with ease) our resulting videos. Why should I jump through hoops because I don't like their crappy software?

I agree. It's nice when software developers take that little extra step to look for recognizable characteristics in files and use them accordingly, rather than solely determined by the file extension.

In case anyone is interested in using the same method of renaming a folder full of files to a different extension, as Pizzle mentioned, just use this:

@echo off
ren *.mod *.mpg

Copy that and paste it in a new text file, changing the *.mod and *.mpg to whatever you want to rename from/to, respectively, and save the file name as "RenameMod2Mpg.BAT" (or instead of mod2mpg, use whichever you're renaming from/to instead, but be sure to save it as .bat). Then just drop it in the folder of files to be renamed and double click it.

Great tip Pizzle. Smile

MTS files are often shot by camera, and sometimes cant be played or edit.

I know this post is 3 years old but
I have a video converter that I got for free and it gave me bad quality .mpeg and .avi videos. How is this different?
