So I thought we needed a thread on Free software out there to help protect your PC. Bottom line if money is tight you still can protect your pc for FREE
Free Anti-virus
AVG Anti-virus
Panda Activescan (the free scan not the paid one)
Online 21 antivirus scan - this does one file at a time but great if you are a torrent person
Malware protection:
spybot search and destroy
Adaware by Lavasoft
SuperAntiSpyware - awesome program (you can read more here: Removing Spyware)
Firewalls:
Comodo
ZoneAlarm
I'm sure there are a lot more that I'm missing, so comment with other ones that you have used and recommend. Remember this is for PC protection only not just for general free programs out on the net.
PC Mag did a story today:
Here are their tops on the lists (although they list more that are not listed below):
Anti-Malware
Antispam
Parental
Password Management
Again, they are all FREE
does Zone Alarm still hog resources like it used to? The last time I remember it being good was like version 2.7 or a hair later

I haven't checked for a while either, but I used to be a diehard ZoneAlarm fan until it became such a resource hog. Maybe I'll take a look again soon and see if they sorted it out. I have a feeling they didn't though.
sd, do use comodo, if so, have you had any trouble with it?

I used to love Comodo, but wanted to try some new stuff out that I hadn't tried yet, so right now I use AVG Internet Security. AVG
isn't bad, but getting control over it sometimes can be a little annoying. It's been a little while since I've used Comodo though, but back then I never really had any problems with it.
I do tend to prefer Firewall software that has AV stuff added to it, rather than vice versa though. I tend to know how to avoid and what to look for as far as viruses and spyware, so I never have a problem with that, even unprotected, so I like to just be able to generally run an easily configurable firewall, so in that respect, I liked Comodo better.
It couldve been my setup, but it seems like I was getting alot of freezes with it etc. Do you know anything bout the comodo virus scanner suite?
I'm just wondering if it is as good as AVG as far as picking up viruses etc.
I used MalwareBytes Anti Malware
recently to get rid of some nastiness on my mom's and my stepmom's computers. Its definitely worth having.

Thanks Smartmom !
free ! I think AVG
Free is actually a better value than Panda Security paid version !
I agree with these recommendations but please don't pay for Panda Activescan virus software just do the Free online scan as far as a paid program its not worth what you pay for there are a lot better paid for versions out there which I simply just use AVG
Some people do swear by other paid versions , Why pay panda $20 a year for life?
