A "gravatar" is a Globally Recognized Avatar. It's an image that appears alongside your name when you post on blogs and forums etc. If you're an active participant in online discussions, get a gravatar and get recognized. However it can be a pain to upload your avatar to every site where you participate. And if you want to change your avatar, you have to do it all over again. With a Gravatar you won't have to do that, because it allows you to upload ONE copy of your avatar, which is automatically picked up by ALL the blogs and forums where you post (at least on those sites that have enabled gravatars). If you change your gravatar, it automatically changes everywhere you use it, all over the web.
To get a free Gravatar, go to Gravatar. Click Sign up now, enter your email address, then click the activation link in your confirmation email. After choosing a username and password, you can upload the image that you want to use.
You will need to choose a G, PG, R or X rating for your avatar. This is important, because sites that display gravatars can block images based on the ratings. Most sites will only display gravatars with G or PG ratings, so if you want people to see your gravatar, don't include profanity, violence, nudity, or drugs. The exception of course would be sites that specifically have those types of content.
well I opened a gravatar account (very easy) and did a avatar there. I had to get rid of the paperbag guy on my comments I was going to use the one above but it seams they like square ones go figure
FYI make sure you use the email addy you signed up here with to make it change (it auto does it)
Well, I've enabled it here, but after looking around, I don't see where it's actually taking effect, .
Edit: ahhh ok, I see it. Not a fan of where it puts it. I might have to do a little custom coding to get it to work "right".

I change my avatar often now mainly out of boardom. I have learned to put "SM" on it (I've had my avatars stolen). Generally my avatars are ones I have created or they are crops from a pic and always have to do with eyes.
