Clarification on Browsing

First, I want to give you some background and then maybe you can clarify how "browsing" on Facebook is done.
Almost 2 weeks ago I got a poke from a man in Egypt at the time I thought it was odd but I just blew it off. This morning I woke up and had a friend request from another man but this time he was from Turkey. The Egypt guy had like over 336 friends and it doesn't appear to be a fake profile. Most of his friends are in the Middle East/Africa regions with a handful in the US and some in S.America. The Turkey guy has only like 23 friends and there are some here in the US. My husband is currently stationed in Iraq, and his job has lets just say "Clearance". I talked to him about this and we agreed that I need to understand more about how the browsing feature works.
As of about 6 months ago I stopped using Myspace and went over to just Facebook. I know that you can browse on Myspace and how that all works. My understanding of Facebook is you can find people by the following that I am part of:
Name (my last name is in the top 3 most common, First is more unique)
Regional Network (365,463)
Groups (only high school and elem. school)
Fan of (just like 2 things)
I had Myspace for years and only had a few weird people locally try and add or chat. Since the operations that my husband participate are privey I need to find away to make sure that these are just horny men trying to chit chat. We all know that you can write applications for facebook yourself and run on your own server like they are on Facebook.
Can someone give me some insight please.

Oh please hot... no way I just took a fluke picture. Thank you for the compliment though. Oh I locked it down.. all short of making my profile pick only visiable to friends or my network. Thank you for the help I wouldn't have fine tuned it.

OK that sounds just kinda strange. Maybe they are just browsing women like you said and since you have a common name. Also lets face it I think most men would think your HOT (since I know what you look like and were friends). However yeah I would be suspicious in the line of work your hubby does. How do you have your settings on facebook now? I am by far not a facebook expert but I figured I would get the ball rolling for those who are. I know you can mark your profile that ppl can't friend request you or that they can't message you. You can even mark that you don't show up in searches. I use to have mine on the top level for everything but then it only meant that the only way I could get friends is if I searched them out so I changed it.
