From the mouth of Babes

Green's picture

I will begin by saying there is never ever a dull moment in the Green household. With a husband, 4 kids, a dog, and 2 cats I find myself singing along to Old McDonald or on the really "good" days I get that almost eerie circus pipe organ theme in my head. I have 3 daughters and a son who will be 6 in just a few days. He is all boy and loves loves his action figures, super heroes and one of his favorite must watch 3 times a day movies Narnia. We live a rather sheltered life and don't do alot of traveling. Our activities usually relate to the same group of friends/people on our daily trips to this and that events that the kids have going on. This evening we went shopping just my son and I looking for his birthday present . A remote dinosaur that he has been talking about since Christmas. While we were in the store my not so quiet nor shy son froze stiff and I watched his jaw drop to the floor. I looked up to see what had captured his attention. Standing in front of us was a family shopping in the toy department. The Mom was averaged sized and was pushing a shopping cart. Dad and daughter walking hand in hand were "little." I bent down to my son to try and explain to him that we are made in all different sizes and God made them smaller. My son oblivious to what I had said took off and ran up to the family. I, of course followed as quick as my not so 6 year old feet would take me. By the time I got there my son had already shouted "Wow, I have never seen real life Narnians before" I was expecting and was trying to be ready for any and all possible reactions from this man in front of us. I opened my mouth to say something but , nothing would come out. I had no words. none. I then squeaked an I'm sorry he has never... The man interrupted my apology with a smile. He went up to my son and extended his hand and shook my sons hand. He held his other hand up to his lips and said shhhh dont tell anyone we're here little one. He winked at me and wiped a "dont worry about it" into the air with his other hand. I smiled back at him as he caught up with his family and continued on his way. My son was so excited he forgot about the dinosaur. He HAD to come right home to watch his movie. I felt blessed by this mans enormous understanding. He embraced my sons innocence and allowed him to feel the magic of believing in a 6 year olds world. He took no insult to my sons actions or words. I am grateful for the kindness of this wonderful man. My son has a new hero. The Narnian he met for his birthday. I too have a new hero. The Narnian my son met for his birthday. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to a very big man.

What a lovely story! I find that most people who are parents themselves are quite understanding of situations like this. One time I was a girlfriends house with my then 4 yr old. We had stayed for dinner, and she had served broccoli as part of the meal. Now my son loves broccoli but he likes it crispy and green (no pun intended Laughing) My friend had pretty much overcooked hers and it was really soft and kinda brown. So when son o' mine tastes it he says out loud "ewww this broccoli is disgusting, it's not cooked the way you do it mom, what happened to it". So of course my girlfriend just laughed out loud while I sat there red faced and apologizing. She completely understood I guess because her daughter was also 4.

What a cute and sweet story. I totally missed this one, chalk it up to being on vacation. Doesn't it make you feel good when a complete stranger notices the innocent of a sweet child amazed. You were lucky you ran into a wonderful man and not some idiot who could have blown up.
So I have to ask did you ever get the dinosaur? My kids had a remote dinosaur when they were little - that brought back memories Big Grin
