This is a great idea for anyone that uses itunes on their mac and doesn't keep all music in the same place on your computer, just like me !
TuneSpan is an application that allows you to move the media files in your iTunes library to multiple drives without having to adjust any settings in iTunes (such as "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" or "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"). TuneSpan (and TuneSpan Helper) also assist in keeping track of the moved files (which are referred to as spanned), as well as notifying you if any spanned tracks will not be available when iTunes launches (if a necessary drive is not mounted). You can even be notified as events occur (if a spanned file is renamed, moved, or deleted). TuneSpan also allows you to span tracks repeatedly, and to restore them to their original locations. span: (verb) to use TuneSpan to distribute media files in your iTunes library across multiple drives. When TuneSpan moves your media files to other drives:
• Tracks are never removed from iTunes; preserving playlists, play counts, etc.
• Files are moved by Mac OS X, which means each original file will only be removed after it has been successfully copied to its new location.
TuneSpan supports and can span all media types, but handles different files in different ways:
• TuneSpan can only coerce iTunes into changing the locations of tracks whose files are MP3s; such tracks are referred to as fully spanned.
• All other tracks are dependently spanned, which means they are dependent on TuneSpan Helper to be available in iTunes.
Finally, backup your iTunes Media before using TuneSpan and, of course, use at your own risk.
