One of my all-time favorite programs is Snag-It. But one feature it lacks, (and I've seen requests on their forums for it, which Techsmith keeps ignoring for some reason ), is the ability to directly send a captured (and edited if you choose) screenshot directly to Imageshack.us, the popular free image Hosting place, from within the program, the same way you can send captures to other programs or email, and so on.
So I went about figuring out a way to do this, since necessity is the mother of invention, a motto I've always lived by ...
When you get done following these steps, you'll be able to create a screenshot capture as usual, send it to Imageshack with the click of a button, and after it's uploaded, it'll automatically place the new Imageshack URL to the image on your clipboard, for easy pasting into wherever ...
Sounds sweet eh? Alright, here we go ...
Things you'll need:
One way to see if you already have Clip.exe on your computer is to open a DOS window (press the Windows Key + R, or go to the Start Menu and click "Run ..", and type "cmd" (no quotes) into the line and click OK. Once in the DOS window simply type "Clip" (again, no quotes). If you get a reply stating: "INFO: Type "CLIP /?" for usage." then you have it. If you don't, grab it from the link above, and copy clip.exe into your Windows folder, and then forget about it.
Grab ShackShag from the link above. To the right of that page is a green box where the actual file to download is. Download the one that ends with "win32.zip". Copy the Shag.exe file to the same folder that you installed Snag-It to.
Create a Batch file. This step is unfortunately necessary because if you try to type the pipe character ("|") into the Snag-It configuration window, the "OK" button stays grayed out, so this is a workaround.
Open up notepad.exe on your computer (I'm assuming we all know how to use Notepad already) and paste this in exactly as it shows:
shag %1 | clip
Save the file with the filename of: geekdrop-imageshack.bat. If you want to skip this step and just use my pre-made one, I'm attaching the file to the bottom of this post, just click it to download.
Once this file is created (or downloaded), store that file also in the same folder where you installed Snag-It.
Here's the fun part. Just follow these screenshot steps in order ...
And that's it. Now whenever you create a screenshot, you choose (in the editor): "Send" select "Program", and in the box that pops up, select "Imageshack.us" (unless you named it something else). It'll upload it to ImageShack, and once it's done uploading the new URL to the image will be right there on your clipboard. If you want to do it without sending to the Snag-It editor first, you just set "program" as your Output.
Now to figure out a way to do the same thing but with Photobucket, since Techsmith is ALSO ignoring all requests for that one ...

geekdrop-imageshack.bat | 14 bytes |
I totally agree, a Photobucket one (including folder selection) would also be an enormous plus in Snag-It, and it's been requested there (including by myself) numerous times, but I've found Techsmith to not be very customer-friendly when it comes to actually adding requested features.
Thanks for these details instructions, but for me thay fail. After attempting upload, the clipboard says e.g.
Failed to upload: C:\Users\Chris\Documents\Snagit
\Program\SNAG_Program-0000.pngThis is with Snag-It 11 on Win7 Pro 64-bit.
Every so often ImageShack makes some changes which forces the author of ShackShag to have to update his software. I've seen it happen once before and emailed the author requesting to update his program, which he did rather quickly. I get the same error again too, so it might be good to send him another email asking for an update. He might not be aware it's broken.
Ultimately I really wish Techsmith would just make an official plugin to do this so we didn't have to do a workaround, but they're horrible at listening to user requests and implementing them. They're completely oblivious to us mere users.
Thank you for the great tutorial. It worked like a charm.
I fail to understand what techsmith does not add this to the Snag-It itself as a built in feature. If I can do it surely Techsmith can do this as well. I know lots of users who use imageshack and this is a boon for them.
