If you're a business owner, you've no doubt heard others sing the praises of social media marketing. After all, it's free to get started with and it is a great way to get people talking about your brand. If you decided to jump on the social media bandwagon but aren't experiencing success, you might assume that social media marketing isn't all it's cracked up to be. But to be blunt, the problem is more likely your social media marketing strategy.

Here are three signs that your social media marketing strategy sucks:

  1. Your posts are inconsistent. There are no hard and fast rules about how often and when you should be posting content on social media. However, there are some basic guidelines that you should keep in mind. First of all, you need to post often enough. If you're only posting one or two times each month, chances are it's not going to be enough to get people's attention. It's also possible to post too much. If you're blowing up people's news feeds they'll simply stop following you. However often you decide to post, it's important that you do it consistently. If you're posting daily in the mornings one week, don't post a couple of times the next week in the evening.

  2. You're posting the wrong content. Your social media efforts can only be as good as the content you're sharing. Many business owners new to content marketing make the mistake of posting the wrong kinds of content. The right content will depend on your audience. If your social media marketing efforts aren't yielding results, it could be because you don't have a solid understanding of your target audience. Put together a buyer persona and you'll begin to see what kinds of content you should be sharing. Additionally, don't be afraid to share content that others have created. You don't have to limit yourself to content you've personally created. Just make sure to give others credit where credit is due.

  3. Your tone is inconsistent. Even when you are posting great content and posting consistently, the tone of your posts may still be causing your efforts to be wasted. The point of social media marketing is to establish your brand as a reliable source of information. Your followers won't see you as reliable if your tone varies from one post to the next. Chose a tone that works well for your brand and your message and stick with it. It might be very formal and proper or it might be very casual and fun. As long as it is appropriate for your brand and you use it consistently it will work to your advantage.
