Ok you have to kinda laugh at this hack. You know when someone posts a link on twitter to a website how twitter uses a service that shortens the URL. Its kinda like "tiny URL" where they will take a long web address and shorten it. What happens is when you click on that tiny url it will redirect you to the real url. Here is a example of a twitter that geekdrop did a few days back:

Geek Drop geekdrop Check out these Microsoft Excel Tips: https://bit.ly/ybB9N

well when you click on that URL it will redirect you to our thread here on geekdrop: Excel Tips & Tricks - Use Units of Measure Without Changing Numbers to Text

Here is where they were hacked - someone figured out how thier redirect worked and well for a while every time you clicked on a tweeter URL you got redirected to this one guys blog, Kevin Saban's blog. His current blog talks about what happened. He claims he had nothing to do with it but his blog count needless to say went way up.

Kevin Saban wrote:

Sadly, Cligs fell victim to an online attack this weekend that changed about 2.2 million shortened web addresses so that clicking on them brought unsuspecting Twitter and Web users to my latest sOCial Sunday post.

After a few tweets voicing my concern to Cligs' @cligs, I spoke with Pierre Far, creator of Cligs. He shared the following information:

  • The security hole that the hacker exploited has been patched.
  • New cligs are not vulnerable to the hack.
  • The cligs edit function that may have led to the issue has been temporarily disabled.
  • Affected URLs are being corrected, and the restoration is expected to be completed over the next few days
  • Cligs' Far is keeping users updated about the glitch in a post on the Cligs blog.

Update (2:50 p.m. June 16): Cligs confirms that 2,188,978 URLs were changed in the attack. Although 93% of those addresses will be restored in the next few days, 161,232 URLs were not backed up. The 2,268 registered users who created 41% of those addresses will be able to edit them after the restoration. The remaining 95,123 shortened URLs, created by anonymous users, will be changed to point to the Cligs Web site. More details have been posted on the Cligs blog.

I dunno for some reason I found this kinda funny. Someone tweeted twitter
