With more free wifi hot spots popping up it only opens the door for some mischievous actions. Well I think this is the first case but in the UP there is a pub that is being fined £8,000 (about $13,183) because someone unlawfully downloaded copyrighted material. Now is this the first time this has happened? I'm guessing no and I'm sure that some how downloaded worse I hate to say.

So what are your thoughts on this one? Should the owner of the hot spot (be it the cafe owner or what not) be liable for what their customers download? If that is the case what about the ISP (internet service provider)? I mean they supply the internet to the hot spot.

In my opinion its kinda like if someone steals my car and then hits and kills someone should I be liable? It will be interesting to watch how this case is handled as it could open the door to possibly many more down the road.

Ok what are your thoughts here?

Well I think in some areas ppl do that - surf around for a hotspot to download. It just goes to show you that you need to make sure your wireless is secured with a password (and one the neighbors wont figure out).

Nah, even if you left your keys in the car that someone stole and then ran someone over, you probably wouldn't be liable (at least you shouldn't be), which is akin to people leaving their wifi unprotected. They might just not know anyone is using it. Soon enough there' ll probably be some lame law requiring you to make sure your network is protected with certain standards and regulations, or you'll get a hefty fine. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Interesting. Leads me to wonder just what was downloaded? Normally to get a fine you would need to be doing something like either downloading an awful lot or leaving yourself connected and uploading an awful lot. Normally not a one time thing. I'm sure though there are things you could get fined for right off the bat but I don't know. Not sure how it works. That's why I get nervous using torrent sites that have a membership. Actually I still havn't used any. It's nice being able to get pretty much anything you want for sure but I don't like staying connected for 24 hours and uploading or anything like that.

Yeah I know that is why alot of folks download from sites like rapidshare. Its easy to download and go, no sharing needed. I do use torrents but only private ones but I have also used rapidshare.
