Going Vegetarian or Vegan

13 replies [Last post]

Alright, I know SM has a veggie kid and that Pizzle is also doesn't eat meat products... I have a few questions.

For the past two years, I've fasted for the 40 days of lent. This means just drinking water and fruit juice. Both years, I got violently ill, and had to expand what I was eating. As a result, this year I'm thinking of just eating veggies. No meat or animal products at all. No fish, no milk, no eggs, no nothing... I guess this counts as vegan? Either way, I'm doing it because Lent involves giving up something that you really like, and I really like meat. Love it. LOVE IT.

I guess I'd kinda like to know a few things... Is there much to eat besides salads? Or will that be my breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 40 days? Does your body react oddly when not taking in meat? I guess I just want to know what to expect, and what I should be fixing myself to eat... I have two weeks.

Your body still needs a certain amount of protein per day or it'll start eating up your muscles for fuel (before it uses your fat). You can get protein from beans, and tofu if you're into tofu. Alot of vegetarians (not vegans) eat dairy for protein too in place of meats, like cheeses and so on.

You can eat a ton of stuff other than just salads. Broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, fruits, all of that. Just take a stroll through your grocery store's fruit and vegetable section. Smile

I've never gone veggie or vegan, I'm a meat eater, just blow the dust off the hooves and drag it in, but I think I've seen sections in the supermarket that make all kinds of boxed, microwavable veggie meals and things too.

I'd also do some basic weight-bearing exercises too if you're going to be cutting calories, again, so you don't lose muscle. Even just some push-ups every day.

I agree you need to make sure that you are getting protein. My son is still a vegetarian but not a vegan. He does drink milk, eat cheese and he will eat eggs. He will eat animal products like that (the egg is not fertilized so its ok) but he will not touch any meat and that includes fish. He gets alot of protein from nuts and he does drink "whey" protein shakes. He like the veggie products that we find at the store. He likes morning star products (just about all of them) and he likes "smart dogs" vegie hot dogs (but I'll be honest my dog wont even touch those).

I really think that your not doing your body good not eating for 40 days. Going a day or two is one thing but 40 days you could be doing your body damage. I hope your also checking with the dr too.

Just a note, if you're going vegan, whey protein is off limits too, since it's a dairy product. Deb is right about the dangers too. A week or two, maybe, if done smart, but 40 days is bad. Take a look at this before you do it.

Actually, I've consulted many doctors, and they think its a great idea. It's a natural detox of the body. You can still get nutrients from 100% fruit juices. So long as you don't try any extreme workouts, you'll be fine. Both times, I got a bug, and it got me sick. Both times I just had to start drinking different juices, and I made it the rest of the 40 days.

Like DoGG suggested, yes fasting does start to eat at your muscles. I lost 20 pounts the first week, and eventually lost 60. That was with drinking soup juice after the 28th day.

I found fasting to be a great thing, and I would reccomend anyone try it. I was doing it religiously, so I found it easier.

All diets you lose muscle, no matter how hard you try not to, or how smart you do it. You just have to try and minimize it as much as possible with weight training and eating protein.

I still have a hard time believing Dr's recommend going 40 days on a fast, using only fruit juices, since they're mostly sugar. That first week was all just water weight. After you stopped fasting, how quickly did the weight come back?

Believe me, you aren't the first person who didn't believe it. All my friends were worried when I was fasting. But it's actually really safe, so long as you are smart, drinks tons and tons of water, and don't push yourself.

You put the weight back on pretty fast. It's not a weight loss solution. Not at all. I gained half back within the first two weeks. I kept the other half off.

OK you loose an average of 60 lbs and then when done you put 30 of it back on in two weeks? Your dr said that is ok? Besides the whole muscle loss (if that is not bad enough) I worry about cardiac damage. One bad reaction and it could be fatal.

Re: Going Vegitarian or Vegan

I saw two docs while I was fasting last year, and both encouraged me. Carefully, and if I had any problems, stop and go see them. When I did have a problem, I went in, and followed their advice to drink soup broth and not just fruid juice. I then continued the rest of the the fast with no trouble. I promise, I'm not the first to fast for Lent, and I won't be the last. Fasting is very good for the body.
