When does child obesity become child abuse? I think a lot of the responsiblity lies with parents in keeping their kids a healthy weight. If your child is obese at what point does it become neglect? abuse? Check out the story of a South Carolina woman who was arrested for criminal neglect because her 14 yr old had reached a whopping 555lbs.
"Authorities in South Carolina say that what went wrong was Gray's care and feeding of her son, Alexander Draper. Gray, 49, of Travelers Rest, S.C., was arrested in June and charged with criminal neglect. Alexander is now in foster care"
What do you think? Should she have been arrested? Is it her fault that he's obese?

Weighing that much is a major health risk. Failing to seek medical treatment for your child is child endangerment. Not knowing or caring that your child's weight puts their life at risk makes you an unfit parent.

wow what a incredibly sad story. As the mom of a a 14 yr old also I can't imagine him being 555lbs. So when does it cross the line- that is a hard question. I don't know if you can say a certain number but more on how the childs health is. I would hope they also would have run tests to make sure that there isn't a medical reason or issue. Bottom line is I hope the boy gets the help that he needs and I also hope mom gets the help that she needs to learn to help him along.
