So did any of our NYers have to deal with this one? I love the one comment below "haven't these people heard of photoshop?" I agree kinda stupid that they didn't tell anyone. Its not like NY is not already dealing with the swine flu and semi freaked out about that.
Updated, 3:37 p.m. | An Air Force One lookalike, the backup plane for the one regularly used by the president, flew low over parts of New York and New Jersey on Monday morning, accompanied by two F-16 fighters, so Air Force photographers could take pictures high above the New York harbor.
But the exercise — conducted without any notification to the public — caused momentary panic in some quarters and led to the evacuation of several buildings in Lower Manhattan and Jersey City. By the afternoon, the situation had turned into a political fuse box, with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg saying that he was "furious†that he had not been told in advance about the flyover and the White House facing questions about it. In unusually harsh language, the mayor criticized the Defense Department for conducting the exercise and the Federal Aviation Administration for being secretive about it.
The flyover, which began around 10 a.m., resulted in widespread confusion and a flood of calls to emergency hot lines. Perplexed officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and other authorities were inundated with calls from anxious ferry passengers, office workers and residents.
Its so stupid a couple of calls to the media and a PSA and bam it would have been fine....so stupid. NY of all places too...idiots for not telling!
I didn't hear anything about it until reading this. I'm north of the city though, but yes I would have been very nervous about the whole thing. The public should have been been warned in advance, what's the big secret anyway! Shame on them!
Shame on them for this poorly executed idea.. You are in a city that has hundreds of thousands of people living with post traumatic issues and our lovely governement didn't think of that in advance?? Paints a bif fat "F" for FAIL
Smartmom said I should share this little PM I sent her a few minutes ago:
So, in my hours of lazy nothingness I read your NY post about the overhead buzz.. thought of this:
Government: remove the V the N and the T
What do you get?
Go er Men
What do you have left? VNT
Also known as: the government entity for Voluntary National Testing
.. save me from myself please
it was just plain cruel to not inform the public of what was going to happen. geez. *sigh* it's fun on so many different levels living in NYC...
I guess I can't relate to this for two different reasons, because I don't think that it looked like a big deal in the pictures. I mean, it *looked* like AF1... Anyway, here are my two reasons.
Clearly, I didn't experience 9/11 first hand... Nor have I ever had to go through any threat, since I live in a small town in the middle of no where.
Second, we DO have something in this town, and thats an military base. We have flyovers from helicopters and planes all the time. Heck, I've watched them do a night jump before. And I only live a mile away from where they do their camping trips and a lot of their wood practice. So I guess I've become used to hearing and seeing weird things.
Should they have told people? Yeah, I really guess so.
so this pissed off our mayor, the President, and of course most New Yawkers.
ugh the plane was flying low in the Ground Zero area. ya know, where 9/11 took place...i caught the video the other day...yeah i would have been freaked out. it was heartbreaking watching the people on the street panicking, running...you could even hear people yelling "Run!"...horrible, horrible flashbacks. and i still find it annoying they didn't advise the public of this before it happened...
Wonder how much in tax dollars that whole thing ended up costing. Jet fuel and all, for a few pix.
And I didn't realize there were pigs in N.Y.? Learn something new everyday, thanks to GeekDrop.
i think they said the cost of the photo shoot was something like $300,000...i dunno...
, we've got cows too!
Somewhere between fantasy and reality...
